I am on the 5th floor and I still sometimes see lizards on my screen at night. Man these things can really climb. when I do I hit the screen and down they go LOL they also freak me out. But I seen quite a few big ones how big can these guys get?
Are they gekkos ? I think that’s as big as they get, and they eat all the mosquitos :bravo:
I like geckos. I rarely saw them when I was in Taiwan, but I saw them all over Southeast Asia.
I have heard that there are two types of geckos: chirping geckos and non-chirping geckos. Both species are the same size and look almost exactly the same, but the males of one species often make a chirping sound to attract the females, whereas for the other species, both males and females are silent.
I have also noticed that the further south you go in Taiwan, the more often you hear geckos chirping. For example, I usually spend half of each week in Miaoli County and the other half of each week in Jiayi County, and I have noticed that in Miaoli County, I hear geckos chirping only about once a month, but when I’m in Jiayi County, I hear them almost every day, especially during the summer.
Also, I used to live in Hualian (from 1996 to 1997), and I never heard any geckos chirping in Hualian, so I guess the chirping geckos are only on the west coast.
That’s interesting. I’m in Hualien and I hear the chirping geckos all the time.
There’s no need to kill them. They’re 100% harmless and as someone said before, they eat mosquitos. How cool is that?
Kill a gecko? WTF.
The geckos and all other kinds of lizards encountered here are thoroughly delightful little creatures and highly welcome to pop into my home whenever they like. I used to have a lot of them cohabiting with me when I lived in an old building up in the hills, but I’ve never seen even one in my new 15th-floor flat, and I miss them a lot. I especially love those lizzies with greenish/yellowish markings on the back that walk in a more upright position, have extra-long tails, and run about with charmingly studied elegance, though that kind always stayed outside on the balconies or the branches of trees and never ventured inside.
I have a bunch of them in my yard. Basilisks, I think they’re called. I spend inordinate amounts of time catching them and putting them onto my neighbour’s tree so that at least some of them won’t be taken by my cats, but they always come straight back. Feisty little buggers don’t hesitate to bite and their saliva’s a little bit toxic, comes up like a mossie bite. The males turn an incredible dusky pink colour in the mating season. Get one on open ground and it’ll go up on its back legs and run like a mini-dinosaur. Very cool indeed.
I caught one up at Wulai once that was bright emerald green and it stayed on my shirt for more than an hour, seemingly quite unperturbed.
Them’s good eatin.
I think its dead because I hit the screen and it went flying woops didnt know your not supposed to kill them i think it landed on some big metal thing to
I caught one (after a week) that woke me up one night, mainly because he also shit around everywhere.
So I had him in a jar, went outside and opened it on the balcony rail so that he could climb out but he looked at me, then started running (still in tehe jar) and didn’t stop until he reached the concrete 10 floors below. Autsch.
Ghecko’s. I love the way, if you catch them by the tail, the tail comes off.
The tail then proceeds to wriggle around on it’s own for about 20 minutes.
There are no tailed Ghecko’s in my house.
Geckos make great pets if you like reptiles. Just have to buckle down the top of their cage as they can easily escape if it isn’t.
I’ve got the chirpies as well…But we don’t hear them often.
I saw a new one yesterday while I was pruning my palm tree…Grey brown with black speckles. About 4 inches long. Very sluggish. I’ve also got dozens of skinks outside with their iridescent tails consuming the termites that live in the palm trees…
Does anyone know what the common outdoor lizard here is called? About 6 inches long, very long tail, two yellow stripes and constantly doing the head bob?..
The geckos in Thailand are giagantic in comparison to the ones here.
The foot-long ones can bite like a motherphucker too.
By the way, all geckos chirp – it’s the way they attract babe geckos.
Wanna hear?

Yo M.J. Not a head bob. A full on push up.
My wife and I called the one in our backyard “Mr. Pushup.”
Yeah, went head to head with it and it beat me by about 50. I haven’t seen it for a while though, so it must have gotten eaten by a snake. Too bad. It was really cool. Wasn’t scared of me or nothin’.

An endemic lizard called Swinhoe’s japalura (Japalura swinhonis)
here’s some info
http://www.gio.gov.tw/info/ecology/English/animals_e/LowAnimals_e/LowAnimals28_e.htm
From the above link:
“When approached by other animals, males will respond by performing pushups and extending their dewlap-which turns black to make the white specks on their throat more visible-in an attempt to scare away potential enemies.”
Yeah, that sucker stared me down and beat me too. I was huffin’ and puffin’ away at 25 and he was already on 59 pushups.
Actually, they’re really cool animals to observe. They are not skittish and so they’ll let you get close enough to take a cose-up pic.
I don’t mid them in the backyard, they take care of the flies and keep the spider pepulation down.
Wookie,
Your lizard ran down to my place for the termite feast and is too full to leave…
The new moniker, by the way, is perfect…
Almos John, thanks for the info…Your site just answered another question for me. Every couple of months around dusk I’ll spot a rabbit hopping across the back road behind our community. I had assumed for the eight years that I’ve lived on the hill that it was a breeding pair that somebody had let loose…Very cool
