Long term overstayers

It used to be quite popular. I have heard of a few guys who have already done it for over 12 years :astonished: , but I donā€™t know them.

So, whatā€™s the record of overstaying as far as you know?

There was a case about 4 years ago involving a foreigner who had overstayed 20 years!!

Someone finally tell him the Vietnam war was over?

Holy crapā€¦thatā€™s quite the overstay. Out of curiousity, were the fines the same then as they are now?

be careful overstaying. they can put you in detention with a bunch of people from the phillipines or indonesia. you could stay there for weeks, even months before you are finally deported.

needless to say, whitey would not fair well there.

A friend has been here as an overstayer for 14 years. Has no passport, works for cash, and is virtually non existent. Heā€™s in Taoyuan County and the ops there donā€™t want the hassle of busting him.
Nice!

30 years.

He canā€™t get a passport?

Just curious: are your comments based on first-hand knowledge or are they just racist speculation?

I know a guy (also Taoyuan County) who just recently left after overstaying for nearly ten years. He got a slap on the wrist and a 10,000NT fine. No Passport either. They did make him buy a one way ticket out of here though. As for when he can come back? That I donā€™t know.

Another one I know has overstayed about 5 years, has done clinker time and it seems that the cops canā€™t be bothered to kick him out either. Still rides around shitfaced, shirtless and no helmet.

I think there are many more of these types aroundā€¦Some just duck the radar better than others.

Ah yes, we know the same guys thenā€¦10-14 yrs is D, and shirtless rider is M, right?
Just heard that D is in C waiting to come back.

my comments are quoted from AIT so you go accuse them of being racist!

AITā€™s brochure states that, and i quote :

" being the only foriegner in a taiwanese jail would NOT be a pleasant experience".

so go blame AIT not me.

So
people from the phillipines or Indonesia
arenā€™t foreigners?

You would have to really love it here to screw up on your paperwork that badly. I mean, what if you wanted to have a quick holiday in another country, or go home to bury somebody or attend your best friends wedding or something? You would have to give it all up just for that.

That said, I still feel like Iā€™m on some sort of working holiday here. I went on a quick vacation last year (to thailand) and I wished I was home the whole time.

I knew a guy last year who overstayed about 8 years. He lost his passport on purpose, got a new one, and he figured that the customs guys wouldnā€™t be able to figure it out. Nobodyā€™s heard from him since. I hope he saved some money, at least.

If thatā€™s the case heā€™ll never leave Taiwan to work off his debt ā€¦

what a small world. didnā€™t know d had left ā€¦

Oh, too bad I did not manage to say goodbye to D.

he was a nice guy, when not too drunk.

Wonder when they will get around to kick out M.

I managed to get all he sordid details of Dā€™s departure.

I am not going ot post them here, but just point out that when it comes to leaving, he did it with style.

For those of you who are interested in what kind of fine they gave him, then I managed to find out NT$10k, and that was it.
