Any lumber shops that sells woods other than crap luan plywood and those flimsy mahagony looking wood? Im looking for some oak and maple and things like that and I cant find any. The woods that people use around here are so flimsy I bet I could break a 2x4 made out of it with a good strong kick… Asked one shop and he said those wood are so expensive you have trouble finding any…
It’s not easy to find but they are here, and the prices for decent hardwoods are not that out of line compared to back home. I have no idea about Taipei, but have sourced walnut, cherry, chestnut, maple, both red/white oak, alder and other hardwoods in Taichung.
Your best bet is to find a cabinet maker that does more upscale work and ask him…
Good luck.
On a related note,
Yesterday and today, Sunday, morning the wife and I were walking thru the National Cheng Kang University campus.
There are quite a few older trees down from last weeks storm. They have been trimmed out and the smaller branches removed.
But remaining are a lot of sizeable, good diameter stumps and trunks. Some are as much as 18"-20" across. A lot in the 8"- 12" range and 2 meter or so length. I saw quite a few uprooted stumps that were a meter or so long with a top diameter of 14"-18" across. Very goos looking wood.
I do not know the type of wood but it was very dense grain and good looking. A quick visit ad a toss in the back and I’m sure no one would complain. The grounds crew are very …uh…“casual.”
I know a guy in Ying Ge who sells local wood and imports wood from Canada: pine, oak etc…
I don’t know how much you’re after, but he’s a nice guy and I teach his daughter English…so I have some guan xi…

does anyone know any courses i can take? and where? and how much?
If you can remember to bump this thread in about a month, I’ll give you some info on woodworking classes run by an acquaintance of mine. She’s good.
She the one who wrote the book? C might be interested.
Aye. Bikefarm Jeremy knows her. Actually, I think she was maybe featured in Next magazine one time. I’ll ask Jojo. AFAIK, it’s mainly cabinetmaking she teaches but she has all the er… equipment. Anyway, half the fun with woodworking is learning how to use the tools.

My contact is in Canada right now. I’ll try to remember to ask him. Alternatively, you could ask Simon who sells books at Grandma Nittis on a Sunday.
Thanks
i am looking to continue practicing my hobby of woodworking
and woodcarving and i’d like to know where i can find:
- a store to buy woodworking supplies and wood in taipei
- safety supplies for woodworking
- other people interested in this
I’m a complete amateur, (well maybe a little above this) but I’m interested. Especially learning how to make better joints.
