And by the way…you could have warned us about the sad song in the end…I cried like a baby…in front of someone!!! Yikes…there goes my image!!! :fume:
It could have been The Bitch Is Back by Elton John and you still would have cried anyway, you big woosie. :raspberry:
Thanks for sharing this with us, Mordeth! Made me realise just how much I love my own dog.
You’re welcome ![]()
I think the thread where I explained how I got a dog back by laying a trail of my own urine got deleted. This method worked twice for the same dog. The second time it took her more than a week to find her way home but she made it in the end. Apart from my own pee, I walked her companion dogs to and from the area where she got lost, taking different routes there and back every night.
Also, according to my observation, dogs can find their way around by ambient smells - and sounds - as well as those on the ground, lampposts etc. Have you noticed how dogs sometimes stick their noses up in the air, sniffing and listening?
And have you noticed that they can’t do it after a heavy rain? Tom Waits wrote a song about it.
It rained a lot that week. I was always wearing rain gear to go look for her. And I didn’t pee on the ground anywhere between here and there. Juba, I’m sure your dog would have found it’s way home without you peeing…or bringing your other dogs to look for her.
M, that was a nice and amazing story, how long ago was that again? anyway i know u love ur dogs and that is why they fight so hard to get back home, bcz they know that someone that loves them is waiting…
That was a year and a half ago. Chinese new year back in 2007.
I’ve heard various similar stories about cats - particularly ones involving owners moving homes, and the cat disappearing and turning up weeks later at the original house.
Or am I remembering it wrong?[/quote]
I know of a cat that did that. Our neighbour moved to the other side of the hill and took their 2 cats and a dog with them (of course). A couple of days later Mary showed up in our backyard meowing for food. The neighbour came back looking for him and took him away. Then Mary turned up again, and the neighbour came back and took him away again… that happened for quite a few times until Mary learnt to hide when he heard the neighbour calling his name. And he became our cat.
We were quite amazed at how Mary was able to find his way home through those bushes and the bombs…actually just the bushes, but anyway. We also heard from our next neighbour that “the neighbour” was going to take Mary to their parents’ place, which was a couple of hours’ drive away. So Mary disappeared for about a week, and then there he was in our backyard again! We never asked the neighbour if they did indeed take Mary down south, but they never came back looking for Mary either.
Amazing things about animals…I’m sorry for going off-track here, but as I’m reading all your posts tonight I feel deeply saddened. My dog almost died this morning and it HURT seeing him lying there. I’m regreting all the things that I didn’t do and missing his companionship terribly. Think tomorrow night I’ll be spending my time at the vet’s till late.

Sorry to hear that. I dread the day when I have to deal with the mortality of my dogs. BaoBao is only 8 years old, but I often give her extra hugs and walk her more than my other younger dogs. I walk my dogs a minimum of 4 times a day for 15-30 minutes each time…and on the weekends I always take them somewhere fun. So I won’t regret not having spent more time with them. But I’m sure I’ll regret having hit them so much…well I only hit my oldest…she’s somewhat a headache.
Dear Sian,
I’m sorry your dog is sick, i really hope he or she gets better soon. Remember when you visit the vet’s not to feel sorry for him or her, positive energy. Talk in a normal voice, be excited to see him or her. Animals really pick up on negative energy so you feeling sorry for him there or guilty could make him/her a little anxious which won’t help in the recovery.
Give him/her lost of hugs and praise. I hope he/her pulls through.
Dear Mordeth and UKbikerchic,
Thank you very much for your encouragements. I wish I could tell a happy ending, but the truth is he passed away this afternoon, and I wasn’t able to be there for him. Anyway, I appreciate it, thanks.
I’m so sorry.
