I don’t quite get what’s going on in Forumosa. There’s been so many anti-waiguoren posts that I’m wondering if I’m on Forumosa or if I’m on Dave’s Korean ESL Cafe.
I understand this will probably be going to the temp forum soon enough, but is Taiwan recently really becoming so anti-foreigner? There’s no way loveable Taiwan has become this way… Are you sure we are not exaggerating just a bit?
Sorry are you asking why we on Forumosa are bashing foreigners or why there are so many incidents in Taiwan recently that seem to be anti-foreigner?

God damn I hate that word now. It never used to bother me but after the last few months of this media blitz against us non Taiwanesians it is getting on my nerves. LAO WAI this and Lao Wai that. I can’t even buy a cheese burger without hearing that damn word :fume: Please Taiwan go back to Wai Gwo Ren it is so much more pleasing to the ear.
My experience says that some locals (especially old and not-so-educated and close-minded ones) feel sort of threatened by increasing number of foreigners. This behavior is not only for westerners, Indians included too. Probably they have problem with letting-go concept as there sweet little country is filling with waiguorens.
It’s why I joined! Highly amusing to be honest, the stories about devils from another country (I’m not buying into the hype BTW). I’m hoping to bring the love back to all you bitter people transfixed with being foreigners in a foreign place. Feel the warmth of the sun my brothers, you are not alone, well maybe a bit and a long way from home. The only thing I can say is; opinions are like assholes, everybody has one.
Yes lao wai is used too much on the crappy news channels, waiguo pengyou is much better.

I haven’t noticed any increase in posts on anti-foreigner issues. Sure, every once in a while some foreigner (deservedly or not) catches the ire of the sensationalist media, which fans anti-foreigner flames, but it never lasts long.
probably because people who live on internet chat sites instead of actually socializing in their communities wind up harboring resentment and emotional instability. I’m not sure which is the cause and which is the effect, but usually people who fill their lives with tangible human interactions tend to be compassionate, tolerant and understanding members of society.
This is why I own two laptops, two desktops and a shotgun.

I hate laowai. I refuse to acknowledge anyone in China if they use the term with me. Now I have to endure people in Taiwan using it? Time to think about moving back to the old country.
Thai visa sounds alright. I could spend 60 days in Thailand.

There may be slightly more posts on the topic of racism towards foreigners in Taiwan at present, but I don’t think the slight increase is an indication of heightened racism or heightened awareness on the part of ex-pats. Topics trend, wax and wane. In a week or two, we’ll be able to ask why there are fewer threads on the topic of racism than usual.
Nevertheless, the topic has always been one of interest in the Living in Taiwan forum, just as it would probably be for many ex-pat forums in a variety of countries. While it’s always praiseworthy and uplifting to say what one loves about a country, we couldn’t really ask posters not to let off steam about Taiwan’s shortcomings.
If only they knew what was really going on!
