Low-Grid Camping/Living With a Musical Instrument in Taiwan

If a woman gropes you you must be really good looking. Because most women are completely asexual to me.

I realize you’re in a rush to put down in writing all you did, but I have a few Qs.
You spent 20-25 % of your time washing and lugging water?
No smartphone, so why did you need your passwords? You brought your laptop?
No toilet paper on your list? Thus the need for forty plastic bags?
Why the huge expenditure on batteries?
What was the aboriginal cleaning lady cleaning?
Taipei is a little more low-key than Hualien?
What songs do you like to play on your guitar?
What was the name of this hippie festival?
Thanks for your write-up. Sounds like a pretty wild time.

I’m sleeping rough in Hualien City tonight. On purpose. To hell with the Puyuma.

Do you have any wisdom or advice?

Do Androids Dream Electric Sheep?

I love these kinds of stories. Thanks for sharing! What is the name of this festival and how do you find people who are into this kind of way of living in Taiwan?

What was your drug stash for the trip.

I generally start with a blotter of acid, a bag of mushrooms, big lump of hash, ten tabs of ekky, maybe some Valium for the come down, oh and ether.

It was around about Dulan when the drugs began to take hold…

  1. Take half a tab first to test the strength.
  2. Keep your valuables in your undies. If they’re stolen, at least you get something out of it.
  3. If an oversexed amah offers you a ride, don’t let her drink.

You spent 20-25 % of your time washing and lugging water?

Yes, it cut into my day massively.

No smartphone, so why did you need your passwords? You brought your laptop?

Cybercafes.

No toilet paper on your list? Thus the need for forty plastic bags?

Ha. I bought Savlon Wet wipes and Double Care. Moderately amusing.

Why the huge expenditure on batteries?

Boss Pedal, Boss Amp, Crybaby Wah. Get about 4-5 hours use per pack.

What was the aboriginal cleaning lady cleaning?

A motorway service station.

Taipei is a little more low-key than Hualien?

Hualien is more freewheeling. Taipei is Skydragon central.

What songs do you like to play on your guitar?

Good question. Currently woodshedding theme to Godfather, Slash verison, and Misirlou. But I’m mixing it up a bit, throwing in some Jeff Beck type parts, Thurston Mooreish sections, and about 10% Kurt Cobain. It’ll take about 2 months to get them both good. Do you play gtr?

What was the name of this hippie festival?

I honestly don’t know, hahaha. But it was in Yan Liao, Hualien. About 30 minutes bus ride from the centre.

Thanks for your write-up. Sounds like a pretty wild time.

It was low-key wild, for sure.

~O~

Most of your questions are somewhat trite and technical. Are you an engineer?

Ask me more open questions, if you wish, so I can write this all down.

I have many dear memories that Im worried will dissapear.

My most valuable item is a black Epiphone SG.

She was undersexed. Hence horny.

You’re going to need some bigger briefs.

Are you sure about that? Maybe she’s just horny all the time and can’t get enough.

You’ll get us slung into temp again, bear. haha.

Actually I gave up most of that. But I used to have some good times…

I dunno if this sounds dumb, but I realized you could get similar highs by just eating clean, staying off smartphones, and playing guitar a lot.

Magnesium Oxide calms the nerves, for example. Better than Valium, long term.

Or she’s a he… because every single woman I have encountered is completely asexual. They do not want sex at all.

I’m sure that’s a temporary condition…

I keep meaning to read more Philip K Dick. He was a true visionary.

Some of his plot synopses make my eyes pop.

Thanks for your responses. Not a guitarist nor an engineer. People have considered me to be a tad trite however. Probably why I often find myself drinking alone in pubs.

I will find the name when I get back in a few days. It was at Yan Liao Hai Huo, a hostel.

A lot of this doesn’t even reach Facebook, so you have to Google quite hard, or get invited by a friend.

I just knew someone who was selling pottery there.

I have so much to type up. It blew my mind that they were running 3-4 stages with pretty big PAs.

They had big petrol generators. Maybe Taiwan Luthiers knows about stuff like that.

There were about 1 to 2000 people there. I guess about 50 volunteers.

They had this perfect mix between freedom and chaos. Very peaceful. It was honestly better than Reading or All Tomorrows Parties in the UK.

I want to research DIY desalination, cos that could help them a lot.

Yes, please do find out the name! When I lived in Taiwan, I heard rumblings about such events, but I didn’t know where to begin finding them and nobody I knew was interested. Would be great if I had some leads for when I go back…

Tons of awesome vids on YT.

My friend who was selling pottery got annoyed with me that I wouldn’t help him build his dumb Hakka circle tent design, in the blistering heat.

He kept going OKOKOK to me, in that passive-aggresive way that Taiwanese people do. So I just ignored the hell out of him, and went and met other people.

After I left his tent, I went and built my own shack out of a wooden pallete and some branches. It looked absolutely ridiculous. Truly pitiful. But it protected me from the Sun.

Once or twice I went to festivals and concerts on my own. I prefer to go with people, but if everyone else is broke, or whatever, I will just gut up and do the lone wolf thing.

All I know is this. A mandolin, ukulele, pair of drumsticks, whatever, can totally transform a day out.

Other props work too. Cameras, dogs, parrots, weird clothes whatever…

You just need a prop, to let other people talk to you.

If I didn’t have my geetar, it would’ve been boring.

Turpentine is a general health tonic. Not the hardware store stuff. I get it in Tianshui Lu. Zhongshan/Beimen.

I think the shop is called Meru. Their staff are moderately attractive.
