I told my son that we could make some soap for his chemistry project but I need some lye.
Anyone into soap making using lye? My grandmother back in Kentucky used to make bar soap out of goats milk and it was the best.
Help.
That sounds like an immensely dangerous chemistry project. I really don’t think that’s a good plan, and I’m surprised (well, maybe not that surprised … ) that his teacher didn’t veto the idea.
Because of a few high-profile cases of wackos throwing acid/alkalis in people’s faces over the past few years, it’s unlikely you’ll be able to get it in dry form without proving you have a business or something. Although I could be wrong … have a look at drain-cleaner products in the supermarket, some of them may be based on NaOH. If it’s for a chemistry project, why not just ask the school?
Frankly the framing of your question is a bit worrying. I sincerely hope you’re not just trying to dispose of the remains of your unwanted neighbours.

Not hard to find. My GF makes soap all the time–I think she orders the lye off Yahoo! Auctions–but I’ll bet you can find it at the chemical supply store behind Taipei train station here, or at one of the nearby cosmetic chemical supply stores (there’s a whole street of them).

I have made soap from “LYE” for 40 years and have yet to have an accident. However I always wear googles and rubber gloves for safety.
I think with what is required no wonder a bar of handmade soap in Taiwan is $$$.

Many 化工店 in the 後火車站 area have lye. My wife makes soap and she gets it here. Sorry, I don’t have an exact address, but, she says there are stores back there that sell ingredients/material for making cosmetics and soap. If you go over there you can probably ask around.
You can still get things like lye and ALL known “strong” acids in concentrated form in the back of Taipei main station. Those places are like a candy store for those anarchist cookbook types.

Do you need something pure, or would the stuff they sell for cleaning drains work just as well? You can pick up a can of “Magic Amah” drain cleaner in just about any major grocery store.
