Mac iTunes, iPhoto laptop no space external drive

So I only have a ibook now for portability in Taiwan. (60Gb internal drive)

But I want to really use Iphoto and Itunes but don’t have enough space on the internal drive.

I have an external drive that I can use.

Is there a way to use iphoto and itunes with the external firewire drive?

will iphoto and itunes blow up if the firewire drive isn’t connected?

can i keep two different databases and a subset of photos/ songs on the internal drive?

running panther (waiting 3 months for tiger to settle)

Yes, you can do all that with your ext. drive.

I find my ext HD to baulky to carry around so my 3000 odd photos are in iphoto on the PB. I mainly use my ext HD as backup. I regulary place my iphoto library onto it and overwrite it. It comes in useful though when using imovie.

Ok. So I figured it out with iPhoto. I can switch between librarys. So if it gets too big, I can move the library to the external firewire drive (I don’t plan on carrying it around its big.)

what about iTunes?

can I keep a subset of music on the laptop harddrive and a larger number on the external firewire drive without screwing up the database and keeping in mind (80%) of the time the laptop is not connected to the firewire drive.

Honestly, music takes up bugger all of you HD anyway. Unless you have thousands of songs I would even bother the hassle. I have 400 and the space is a fraction of my 60GB. An EHD is generally a backup medium. 60GB is pretty big, where is all of your space going?

I also have a 60Gb. About 30Gb is MP3s.
10 Gb? for the OS etc?

so thats 40

I want to leave 5 for the OS

so that 45.

Then add in some apps maybe a game or 2 and bam…i’m at 50-55Gb :frowning:

you could get up to a 120 gig HD to replace what’s in your iBook and then use the 60 for external.

for multiple itunes or iphoto libraries, there are apps you can use to manage. iTunes Library Manager, Libra, and iPhoto Buddy; there are perhaps more.

I have 800+ CDs, I definitely don’t keep all those on my Powerbook. I’m perpetually removing stuff from my iTunes, 23 gigs is already too much to have daily.

You can’t seamlessly switch between iTunes libraries on the fly. Check macupdate.com or versiontracker.com for an iTunes manager or script set. PM if you have further trouble…

roc,

you mean like itunes Library Manager or Libra?

iTunes Library Manager, I believe, is the only one that currently works well; it manages preferences too.

HDs should triple their density starting next year. I think Hitachi wants to this year. 300+ gig notebook drives. Can’t wait! I’ve been waiting since IBM announced the breakthrough many years ago.

chichow, the increase in productivity is well worth the little bugs of Tiger. 10.4.1 is out; 10.4.2 should be out in the next “45 days.”
