What do y’all think about this Makiyo drama that has got everyone into such a frenzy? Is all the outrage justified? Or are they making a mountain out of a molehill? Her and her BF are a right couple of assholes for what they did…but it doesn’t amount to much more than petty thuggery, which happens everyday in every city in the world… Maybe not worthy of dominating the news every minute of every day for the past week or so. Plenty of celebrities have flown into coked out rages and taken it out on hapless lowlies throughout the years…her case ain’t so special is it?

It would of been brilliant if nobody took any notice of her and left it up to the law but, it was never going to happen like that.
There are so many 24 hour news channels here, they need any old crap content to fill-up air time, so much so, that they have lost the meaning of quality not quantity.
There is so much content, they even split the screens, add more and more text, it’s a bit like using AoL on a PC. Nobody needs it but, like a foreigner in Taiwan they can’t stop looking.

That’s exactly what I was thinking. The feeding frenzy is disgusting but without it she would have walked away scot-free with a bu hao isu and a red envelope to the victim, and the cop who stashed the video evidence in his drawer would have received his red envelope under the table.
It should serve as a good example for the other half-wit egomaniacs who think they are special because they are on TV.

Keeps people’s minds of trivial stuff like what’s happening in Europe, America, and the middle east…oh and the earthquake in the Philippines, etc.
The world here stretches from Keelung to Pingdong, Tainan to Taidong. An alien upset the status quo.

Then there is Piers Morgan. FFS, can;t someone strangle that man and save us from his inane blathering. 
I guess the issue here is more about foreign celebrity thinking they’re above the law and the fact that they lied to everyone involved (police, prosecutors, etc.) which just feeds the rage.
If this was done by a local, yes I agree, it would be reported on once, maybe, and then forgotten about.
BUT, every year in Taiwan, the press reserves 5 special stories in the nationalistic fever column. These usually happen when there is a lack of stories.
You can verify this. There are always 5 ‘situations’ each year concerning nationals from each of the 5 countries:
China
Japan
South Korea
Philippines
America
Why? Call it societal cleansing. People need to be reminded of the outsiders and why there should be caution. Be scared! Run to the hills! They are coming to wreck our society and cause anarchy and chaos! Where is the love?? Why can’t we just all get along?
except makiyo is not really seen as a foreigner is she? She speaks fluent mando and is half Taiwanese. I think shes seen as local. This is not an antiJapanese thing. Its an anti mini socialite who is kicking taxi drivers in the head kinda thing.
No, most of the press has been anti-Japanese not only in tone but words. Latest is they are demanding the Japanese association to step up, apologize, and cough some dough, too. It is part of an overall trend to vilify Japanese stuff in media.

It has so many elements that the Taiwanese love:
-epic fall from grace.
-foreigner doing something wrong.
-the chance to lash out at someone famous.
She speaks mandarin with a very noticeable japanese accent. For the longest time, it was the other thing she was recognized for. Or perhaps I should say the third… 
This nationalistic bit really pisses me off. She’s half-Taiwanese, she’s lived in Taiwan since she was 10 and has a grand total of ZERO albums/dramas/commercials to her name in Japan. Her entire career is in Taiwan, most of her education was in Taiwan and she’s spent most of her life in Taiwan - she’s Taiwanese, regardless of her nationality on paper.
There’s a rumour going around Taiwan that Japan is telling her to ‘just come home and forget about it’, which didn’t make any sense to me. After about 20 minutes of scouring the Japanese internet I can’t find anyone telling her to run away and come home, but I found a lot of pissed off people saying ‘It’s nothing to do with Japan’. It hasn’t been reported by the major news sites in Japan that I can find, either, because Japanese people don’t give a toss about Makiyo if they even know who she is. Most reports I’ve found are from blogs and, interestingly, say that a Japanese man who runs a bar in Roppongi did the actual beating.
Actually, it’s pissing me off how she’s playing the foreigner card, too. Apparently she couldn’t understand the driver. Yeah, right.
