Is this word colloquial for any of you, in the UK, SA, NZ, Aus etc.? Or does it strike everyone as a dated equivalent to ‘manufacturer’?
It’s the word that factory is derived from, I believe, and not commonly used.
Better if you could post the whole sentence.
Strikes me as a made up word. Can’t say I’ve ever heard it in Aus.
never used it (and i use the word “manufacture” quite a lot) or seen it written before. So it must be old.
Thanks – I just wanted to know if it was still used in the English-speaking world outside of the U.S., as it strikes this American as outdated and uncommon. The sentence is “Using data on electronic manufactories, this paper…”. I’ll change it. Cheers!
Good luck with that it sounds like an awful article to edit.

Well in that case, you guys are compatriots, as you all come from regions that are part of England, right?
As for “manufactories” – that’s just wrong, not regional, technical or archaic.
It strikes me as a 19th century word.

I think the word is creeping back into use to describe small factories, making firmware and such. Especially in China, and not necessarily by native speakers.
Ok, I admit I was probably wrong. On second thought it seems plausible that factory might have derived from manufactory long ago, but manufactory is now archaic and used mostly by non-native speakers unaware that it is outdated or quaint members of the Commonwealth who insist on using ancient diction in the hopes of appearing sophisticated.
Anyway, the OED will surely give the best answer. Does anyone have one handy?
