Marijuana Leaves?

Whenever I visit Taiwan, I am amazed to see pot leaves everywhere I look. They’re on t-shirts, stuck on motorbikes, even on little toys. But from my understand and experience, Taiwanese don’t smoke and actively reject smoking pot. What’s the deal? I’ve even seen 60+ year old men with pot leaves across their chest.

Those who have no idea what it means, such as this old geezer I photographed, just think it looks pretty, which it does.

Those who think they know what it means (ie., teens and 20-somethings), think it’s cool and rebellious, even if they’ve never smoked it in their lives.

I picked up a copy of POTS. I haven’t read it for a while since they don’t have English anymore. Anyway, they have marijuana leaves all over. There’s a CD-rating column that uses little pot leaves as ratings. The more the better.

well, some of them smoke. At least some of my neighbors do, judging by the aroma wafting through my building the other night…
