Marmite?

Where can I find Marmite in Taipei? I am seriously suffering from Marmite withdrawl. Help!

I echo that. Have been looking for about a year and found no one that stocks it, fortunately you can get it in Hong Kong, and i have occassional friends coming out from UK who bring some.

If anyone knows of a regular stockist then let the rest of us know !!

I use Tesco’s “Yeast Extract”…it’s really good.
Lizzee.

I found Vegemite and generic Marmite (Tesco-brand Marmite, tastes almost the same, although purists might be offended) at the intl. grocery store on the left side of Chungshan once you cross Tienmou. A little pricey though.

BEWARE of Tesco products being sold outside of Tesco. Either the shopkeeper went to Tesco and is selling on the stuff at vastly inflated prices, or more ominously, he has found a source for past-the-sell-by-date produce and is selling that. Check carefully, because the Tesco store in Taoyuan has a problem with over-dated stuff that hasn’t sold.

In the past, they just left in on the shelves, but too many people (like me, for instance)noticed and complained.

Maybe this is a new “made in Taiwan” way for them to get rid of bad food.

Caveat emptor.

YUCK!!!

I agree wholeheartedly with Hobart… Yuck. I would think that Marmite withdraw would be a GOOD thing.

Once on a trip to England a friend of mine gave me some on toast, with the prerequisite cup of tea. It was supposed to be a cure for my “iffy” stomach. It just made my stomach more “iffy.”

I know it’s probably an acquired taste. It just happens to be a taste I don’t want to acquire.

Flicka…prepare to part with muchas guanxi:

Go to the 101 department store, I know it’s awful, but it’ll be worth it. There is a supermarket downstairs, basement floor by all the food places, called 'Jason’s", and they sell Marmite. I know because I heard through the grapevine that they sell Crunchies too (the Cadbury’s chocolates) and I saw Marmite there! Didn’t buy any because I still have a huge jar my dad brought over.
Well…what are you waiting for?? Off you go!!

Didn’t check on Marmite there as I keep importing it from Singapore. But apart from one brand of English licorice and the REAL Mon Cheri (the one with liquor cherry inside), I couldn’t find anything special there. They mostly seem to carry the same stuff that Wellcome does. I usually prefer the Breeze Supermarket. Have you checked on Marmite there, Flicka? It’s much more conveniently located, too (at least for me  )

You forgot to mention that the jar is HUGE and cheap compared to most of the marmite/vegemite sold here.

What’s the address of the Tesco store closest to Tienmu in Taipei? Do they sell a wide range of familiar western products? How far is it in a taxi?

Thanks a million.

I went to Jason’s on saturday for the sole purpose of getting some Marmite. I looked high and low but alas, they had none…

I am sure that I saw Marmite at the American Club grocery store. I will check again next time I go. If they have it, I will let you know the price and I can buy it for you guys if you still want it.

That’s what I thought about Marmite until I went vegetarian. Then I suddenly developed a liking for it. It must have something in it that a vegetarian body craves. Try it mixed with peanut butter and/or smeared on slices of apple. Yummy!

Another yeasty product is Bovril. I had never touched the stuff, mistakenly thinking that it was beef extract. Then on a visit to Florida Bakery (on Zhongshan North Road Section 3, near the Combat Zone), I noticed that it says on the jar “suitable for vegetarians.” So I bought a jar, and have warmed myself up on several cold winter nights with a cup of hot, steaming Bovril! Even Mrs. Juba seemed to quite like the cup I brewed for her.

p.s. Florida Bakery sells some other goodies like olives, pickled gerkins and All-Bran.

Florida Bakery addresses:
中山店:台北市中山北路三段23-5號
No. 23-5, Section 3, Zhongshan North Road, Taibei
仁愛店:台北市仁愛路4段26號
No 26, Section 4, Ren’ai Road, Taibei

Ah…According to Unilever’s Bovril web page and a BBC report, vegetarian Bovril was only launched in 2000. No wonder I never touched the stuff before.

YUCK!!!

You can usually get marmite at Jason’s at 101 - but they tend to put it where you least expect - look for ketchup and it will be nearby.

If you still are having trouble then send me a PM - I know a dealer!

I am looking for Marmite (not Bovril) and Heinz Ravioli. It has to be Heinz.

I’d try the Crap Shop on Buhaoche Lu.

I went to Jason’s on Saturday and they had it!!! They also had the original Wheetabix and Old Speckled Hen beer! I have been feasting on Marmite since then. Damn this is ecstasy. English food is the best in the world!!!
