Massage in Taiwan

Joe Sax: For therapeutic massage, I think some temporary discomfort is OK, but sharp pain is probably not.

Absolutely agree with you. Sharp hot pain is a sign of something more serious wrong, and a distintion needs to be recognized between the two sensations.

My own experiences are always that if I have not had massage for a while, the first one is always the most uncomfortable. I would strongly encourage anyone to not give up after their first massage, but to return with in a week or so and compare the difference.

Joe Sax: Funny, that. During the tuina I suddenly burst out laughing for no reason. It wasn’t ticklish or anything like that, just started laughing.

nah, not strange at all…Isn’t laughter the best medicine… :bravo:

When I first stared getting massages here I found that the massages from blind masseurs/masseusses were much easier to handle. They apply less pressure than the massage places. Many have their own places and I find it easier to enjoy a massage there rather than in the public areas they are often in. I especially liked a guy located on XinYi road near AIT. If anyone would like his name and number, pm me. He lives with his wife (also blind) where they have a small front room for massage. Both very kind and always a pleasure to support their small business.

…shenmaniao…could you pass along the phone and address of this place…I think I will have to try it out…or is it just for men!!!

Quirk, I will take a look at the article.

hi there, does anyone know where to get a good foot massage in taipei?

I measure my new years by birthdays and one of my resolutions is to get massages once a month. Preferable full-body ones. Foot massages don’t really hurt, and in fact tickle me quite a bit, but it seems that ones involving my back and legs are very painful, at least the way your average Taiwanese Joe Reflexology does them. Are there places where they do a good full-body massage, tuning into your threshold of pain (as in not crossing it if possible), and still be affordable for a poor, underappreciated English teacher to treat herself once a month?

Not if you’ve got bronchitis and have recently eaten. Trust me.

Sorry, couldn’t resist…

Good foot massage places everywhere. Just look for a clean and comfortable one…

Im bringing back this thread from the dead, because I have the exact same question, however, in Kaohsiung.

Does anyone know any reputable and decent massage places? (for a girl, not myself  )

Is it possible to buy gift certificates in Taiwan for this, or is it better that I send the person cash and tell them what to use it for? I don’t recall ever seeing anyone in Taiwan use gift certificates.

Thanks for the info

I don’t know about Kaohsiung but I stumbled across a great one in Taipei last year. I had a full body massage plus a foot massage. At first I was a little nervous because I’ve gotten bruises from foot massages at other places but the staff was understanding when I told them to lighten up. The full body massage was one of the best I’ve ever had! The place is slightly ghetto with curtain dividers instead of individual rooms but my masseuse totally put me to sleep. I have yet to find a better place in Taiwan.

Thanks for replying Aeria. I checked out that site, and it looks really good and the rates seem ok.

The only issue is, this girl is in Kaohsiung and I assume her family wont be too happy if she says she is taking a day trip to Taipei…

At the risk of sounding like a total perv I must confess I feel more relaxed when the hands that are massaging me belong to a young female. preferably attractive.

I’d enjoy very much not to tense up whenever anyone else gives me a massage, but it doesn’t work like that.

So I guess the question is if anyone knows any (reputable) places where the masseuses are mostly hot females.

Most places would fit your bill. There’s a lot on Linshen N. Rd. One call Shining Star, which is legit and they have some lookers inside.

My Mrs loves a painful massage and a good scrape, we used to go to the Barber place on Minsheng E and she would have a big painful one and tell them to treat me like a pussy. Most of the time it worked out but if they sent in a new girl it was always dreadful. The worst were the old women who were just convinced it had to hurt you. I now mostly don’t go for massages at all. I miss Vietnam for that.

Surely nothing on Linshen Bei Lu could possibly be legit?

lol I was thinking the same thing. I live near this establishment and pass by it quite frequently. Also get those napkin advertisements all the time. I really can’t imagine this place to be “legit”.

The trick is to look for the places that say chun2 (純) (pure) massage. Then you know it’s legit.

They are all legit… just depends on if you want a good massage… or a bad massage with extra service… so pick the right one.

A wonderful place to get massage and support the blind is located on HePing East Road very near to JeeLung (Liu Zhang Li MRT).

In addition to supporting a small independent business you will also like its clean atmosphere and the relaxing music they play. You have your choice of male or female. My preference is the tall female. I was so pleased with her the first time, I have had no need to try the others.

Address: He Ping East Road, Section 3, no 125, 1st floor
Telephone: 2735 8777

The prices are very reasonable too!
800 NT for complete body massage
400 NT half body massage
400 NT foot massage
200 NT head massage

Buses stopping very nearby: 3, 15, 284, 18, 685, 72, 211, 902, 285; around the corner 650, 1, 294, 282, 611, 207, 284,

Enjoy the relaxation your massage brings!

Peace

I’m surprised people put “relaxing”. The only thing I find relaxing about body massages here is that they will stop doing them when your time is up. I really miss going to a place where a massage actually leaves you feeling good and doesn’t cause your muscles to tense up to the point of pain when it’s over. I’ve had that happen too many times with my calves and neck here.

Just for kicks and giggles, I went to a Thai massage place to see if it would help loosen the tense muscles in my back and neck. That was four days ago and today is the first time I’ve been able to bend my neck or roll my shoulders without any pain. I am almost tempted to offer real massages to people who are tired of feeling worse after visiting these places of torture if they will pay me with one in return.
