Measles (Rubeola) outbreak in Taiwan?

Jesus, I thought they were the same guy, the dates are basically the same -___-
Lesson learned: don’t go to hospital on the 2nd or 3rd of April.

I thought the same, then I checked …oops!

I had measles as a kid.
No big deal most of the times.

Think about how we lived in the west suburbs. How many people you met a day? What kind of people? What you did when you got sick as a child? How many parents got sick and brought the disease to their offices and their colleagues and their families got sick?

Now think how many people you encounter a day here. The cramped conditions. What kind of people. The good thing is that people here have quick access to health care.

It is a big deal here in Taiwan for pink eye. Spreads like, well, the flu.

That’d be rather brave of him, and possibly irresponsible.

The headbutt was one of the commonest ways of contracting measles when I was a kid growing up in Scotland.

Over 7000 people were exposed in this batch:

Taipei, May 15 (CNA) A recent wave of measles is over as the incubation period for the disease has passed for all individuals under observation, Taiwan’s Centers for Disease Control (CDC) said Tuesday.

CDC Deputy Director-General Philip Lo (羅一鈞) said observation and monitoring of all individuals who came into contact with carriers of the virus as part of the recent disease cluster has ended.

According to CDC statistics, 24 confirmed cases of measles have been reported in Taiwan this year, of which 17 were contracted domestically and 7 abroad.

Domestically, a total of 7,563 individuals who came into contact with measles carriers and were placed under observation have now completed the period of observation, CDC data showed.

Eh one more, this time in Taipei. He apparently caught the bug in Thailand.

A new imported case of measles has been confirmed in Taipei after a man tested positive for the virus, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) said Tuesday.

The victim, in his 30s, had a cough and fever May 17, and two days later developed rash-like symptoms, after which he immediately sought medical attention and blood samples were taken.

Tests confirmed Tuesday that he was infected with measles.

CDC Deputy Director-General Chuang Jen-hsiang (莊人祥) said the man has since been quarantined for observation and treatment at a local hospital.

According to Chuang, the patient was in Thailand May 1-7.

Upon his return, the man used city buses, trains and the ride-hailing service Uber to commute around Taipei, including the city’s Neihu District, he said.

34 people have been identified to date as having come into contact with the victim, and will continue to have their health monitored until June 10, when the disease’s incubation period has passed.

So far this year, there have been 25 confirmed cases of measles infection, the highest recorded number in Taiwan in the last seven years, according to the latest CDC data.

Among them, 17 were contracted domestically and eight abroad, the data shows.

Bit more info

According to the international epidemic surveillance data compiled by Taiwan CDC, the global measles epidemics have continued to occur. Among the neighboring countries, India, Indonesia, the Philippines, China, and Thailand have reported a higher number of cases and cases have continued to occur in these countries. In addition, in Europe, Greece, Ukraine and France have been hit the hardest by measles, while Romania, Italy, Serbia, and the United Kingdom have all reported a higher number of cases compared to the previous years. Currently, Taiwan CDC has issued a travel notice of Level 1: Watch for measles to 17 countries, including the aforementioned countries, Kazakhstan, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Guinea, Sierra Leone and Nigeria.

Taiwan CDC urges that measles is highly contagious and unvaccinated travelers will continue to bring the disease into Taiwan. Hence, travelers planning to visit affected areas are also advised to visit the outpatient travel clinic at contracted hospitals in the nation to determine the need for MMR vaccination, the agency said.

At least they are aware of the danger and advice to take the vaccine as prevention.

Seems a big year, another case in Northern Taiwan the 30th of the Year

Guys and gals, bit of a measles problem in Filipinas, and at least 5 cases imported to Taiwan, so, just a heads up.

Just an update on Filipinas situation.

Just a reminder that developing nations do not have the resources to handle this, so please if you are not vaccinated and do not want to vaccinate, do not come!

Another warning, do get your vaccines:

The Taiwan Centers for Disease Control (Taiwan CDC) announced four new measles cases in Taiwan, including two indigenous cases and two imported cases, on Wednesday (June 4).

Both the two indigenous cases, an under-one-year old baby girl and an over 30-year-old male, live in northern Taiwan, Taiwan CDC said. The two imported cases are in an over 30-year-old male who resides in southern Taiwan, and an over 20-year-old male in northern Taiwan.

To prevent further transmission of the disease, the local health authority has identified 449 contacts, including family members, people at work, healthcare personnel and patients, airline personnel, and tour groups that they came into contact with to monitor and follow up until June 19, the health agency added.

Thus far this year, a cumulative total of 99 measles cases, including 66 indigenous cases and 33 imported cases, have been confirmed in Taiwan, according to Taiwan CDC.

Between this and the dengue fever thread my hypochondria is kicking into overdrive. :disappointed_relieved:

Don´t forget to update the thetanus shot every 10 years.

As of May 14, not all the hospitals are providing the self paid shot. The vaccine situation shall be improved in July.

Taipei, June 27 (CNA) The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) on Thursday confirmed one new case of measles in Taiwan, saying the patient had contracted the infection at a hospital.

The 7-month-old boy was at the emergency room of a hospital in central June 8-9, at the same time as a 1-year-old girl who had measles, the CDC said.

The boy was taken back to the hospital Thursday after he developed a rash on June 21, and follow-up tests confirmed that he was infected with the same strain of measles as the girl, the CDC said.

The girl is believed to have contracted measles during a visit to Vietnam in March, according to the CDC.

So far, 510 people who had contact with the two children have been identified and will be monitored by health authorities through July 15, the CDC said said.

At the hospital, all personnel who have not been vaccinated against measles will be required to obtain the measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine, CDC Deputy Director-General Chuang Jen-hsiang (莊人祥) said.

So far this year, there have been 101 confirmed cases of measles in Taiwan – 66 locally acquired and 35 imported, according to CDC data.

Thailand, Vietnam and the Philippines are the top three sources of measles infections among Taiwanese, according to the CDC.
