Media player problem

This is not a major, but…

I use windows media player for audio and vlc player for video. A few days ago I played around with the settings, and now all my music folders start playing with vlc, and all my song files display the vlc orange road cone icon. I can right click a music folder or file and choose “Play With WMP”, but it’s a bloody nuisance.

Problem is, I was pretty cut when I messed things up, and now I can’t remember where or what I did. Oops. Have looked everywhere - WMP and VLC settings, folder options, etc - but can’t reset WMP as my default audio player. Or get rid of all these annoying little orange cones.

…if anyone knows a solution I’d appreciate it.

Cheers

Try this

Open Windows media player, click on “Tools” and select “Options”
Then click on the tab for “File Types” and select all of the audio file types.

That should reset all of the associations for audio files to Windows media player

Hope this works

Did you try the Tools\Options\File Types menu in the WMP to associate the music files with WMP?

Dunno about VLC, maybe there is an option to remove certain files types that may need to be changed, too.

Edit: ups, too late.

Thanks, but how do I select all the audio file types?

You could do it manually, since the list should be short: midi, mp3, wav, wma and “Music CD Playback”. You can even throw in some other formats, such as “aiff” and “au”, but you might not need to bother with them for the basic audio files.

Finally got it sorted, in a messy sort of way. Must remember not to tamper while imbibing.

Thanks for all your helpful advice.

A bit more direct way to change the default player: Right Click on the file, Open With…, Choose Program…

Select the program you want, tick off the “Always use the selected program” box at the bottom, then OK.
