I use a front brake down hills, or plan stops better… and I don’t ride in busy areas, so no surprise stops.
Track cyclists don’t brake much, and they NEVER do skids. Skids are for cool NYC kids who developed them to play in taxi traffic, IIRC. that was 1995-2000? then for a few years after that, they even had longest skid competitions, most outrageous elephant skids, etc.
Elephant skids are when you lean far enough forwards to hang your junk over the stem to encourage the back wheel to lift with less pressure needed… it’s a figurative expression, although knowing the NY scene back then (and/or the SanFran scene), i’m sure that someone has done that naked.

Pretty dangerous on wet roads.
On wet days I have choice of mountain bike with disk or my road bike.
The luxury of a stable of bikes is nice.
Or use my car
