Look into taiwans somewhat recent history of the “education system”. I suppose many of my family and friends in Taiwan have been treated that way, though the shapes of the wooden punishment equipment varied a bit…we were occupied by Japan after all. In Taiwan they would just stand before the teacher and be beaten and humiliated. No need for shackles or frameworks 
fear was framework enough. Long live he Chinese way!
