Montezuma's Revenge

Any ideas?

It’s been going on for almost 2 weeks now. I could shit through a screen without touchin the sides. No pain or cramps. Just fluid of various shades that could be found in Hualien.

It started out after eating very spicey hotpot which I always seem to get over in a day or so but this time it’s carried over for 2 damn weeks. I’m a tad concerned because of the variety of ‘colour’ and that I have ZERO pain.

Going to a Doc will be my last resort. So any advice would be appreciated.

Get to a doctor now you shithead. I’m serious. If you have loose stools for more than a few days you need to see a doctor. TWO weeks? Are you mad? GO!

Gotcha.

I’d just like to know if anyone has had similar experiences and what, if anything, did it amount to. Before goin to a doctor, I like to be informed of the possibilities before they run tests. I’m googling but it’s going to be a loooong day of research if I can’t get any pointers out here on F.com.

Fank Q…Ah-soOOoOo

Get thee hence to a reputable and hopefully english speaking Dr.
You are dehydrating and losing electrolytes.
2nd floor, General patients, National Cheng Kung University Hospital is excellent. Look for Dr. Wu, the office in the far left side corner.

Uhm, MONSTER, you can die from food posioning.

After you get this taken care of… and dehydration is SERIOUS! You’re lucky it’s no longer so hot… DO NOT EAT HOT POT! That’s nasty stuff. Raw meat going in at the same time cooked is coming out… there’s just not enough time to kill all the nasties.

I concur.

You need to go and see a doc pronto!

Mate, it could be absolutely anything, from a simple bug like giardiasis (fairly common in Taiwan) to bowel cancer. Get it seen to immediately. A good doc would require a sample and check it for bugs and other nasties. This means following up after the intial visit, even if the likes of Lomotil or whatever he gives you eases the situation. If the quack says return, do so.

If you’ve gone two weeks you must be re-hydrating or you’d be completely off your head or dead by now.

Ya. I drink as much green tea as I can which is probably the reason why the colour is what it is. Water as well. I’ve been eating greens (spinach/collards) and nothing else but bread, tuna and egg whites. Vitamin intake is up to twice a day.

I’ve beaten everything that’s come my way of illness. So I’m optimistic that it’ll pass in time. The only thing I find strange is that I have NO pain whatsoever. Knock on wood.

I’m going to give it till the end of the week and see about going in on monday. I had a ray of hope when yesterday a few crap rockets were passed. My system is fighting it. We’ll see.

Has anyone had an experience with something of this sort? That is, to have it last more than just a few days to a week?

Granted for me or anyone, going on two weeks come sunday is abit much.

Yes, I’ve had something similar while traveling in Morocco and eating street meat. (Sounds nasty, but bbq’ed sheep or goat in half a flat loaf is yummy, especially after 6 hours on a third rate bus.) Didn’t last two weeks, though.

When I got home, I found that any greasy food would quickly send me to the can. Saw the doc, he said that he’d had the same thing while traveling in India. Didn’t have an explanation–“non-specific event”–and suggested that it’d pass in 3-6 months. It lasted more than three years. Even now, ten years later, I’ve got a sensitive stomach.

BUT, when I saw the doc, he stressed that more than two or three bouts of diarrhea can be dangerous.

Why would you wait? You’ve waited. Don’t be a bozo. Get your leaky ass to the hospital.

Yeah, but realise one day something will definitely knock you permanently off your socks. Now that would be really, really stupid if it were something, like say bowel cancer, which is curable if caught early, but will kill you if gets too advanced.

By the way, my boss died of bowel cancer last week at the age of 52, he’d been fighting it for five years. He was an outstanding man, someone who did fanatstic things for the region, and someone who really did deserve more time.

A sterling example of why men usually die younger than women. I kid you not.

It is most likely giardiasis, but then it could be cancer rapidly spreading from your bowels or your pancreas to your liver whwere it will basically become terminal. Different colours you say? Think bile. Now do you why would that would be there? I do, but a quack will know better.

Yes, quite.

BUt what if the doctors say it’s not bugs or cancer. What else could cause loose stools?

My guts have been all over the shop (figuratively, and literally) for the same amount of time or longer. Some days good, some days cramping, followed by ‘liquidity’, so to speak.

I’m worried, but there aren’t any English-speaking docs in my town, so I have to get my TA to accompany me to the state hospital. The idea of stool samples makes me uneasy.

But rather get a diagnosis early, than too late. For peace of mind at least…

This all sounds fairly bening, but believe me, any change in bowel pattern should be assessed to rule out nasties, ESPECIALLY if it is ongoing…
What causes diarrhoea ?
Too much fluid is passed (secreted) from the blood-stream into the bowel, for example in gastroenteritis. This is how some laxatives work.

The bowel moves its contents through too quickly and too little fluid is passed back into the bloodstream. This is one way in which anxiety produces diarrhoea.

More liquid is drunk than the bowel can cope with - this seldom happens, but is one way in which drinking too much beer can cause diarrhoea.

What causes acute diarrhoea ?
Food poisoning.
Gastroenteritis
Anxiety.
Sometimes treatment with an antibiotic.
Alcohol (to excess).

What causes chronic diarrhoea ?
When diarrhoea goes on for a long time, the most likely cause is the irritable bowel syndrome. It is called a ‘functional’ condition. This means that the bowel produces stools which are looser or more frequent than normal, although the bowel is not diseased.

Less commonly, there are also several conditions which cause chronic diarrhoea:

Inflammation of the bowel - eg. ulcerative colitis or Crohn’s disease. The diarrhoea in ulcerative colitis often contains blood
Poor absorption of food - eg. coeliac disease or chronic disease of the pancreas, when the stools may be very pale, offensive smelling and difficult to flush away
Hormonal changes - eg. diabetes or an overactive thyroid gland
Some bowel cancers
Chronic bowel infections
Some stomach operations
Some drugs including antibiotics, magnesium-containing antacids, pills for blood pressure or Arthritis and laxatives
foods including milk in some people who digest milk sugar (lactose) poorly and wheat products in - patients with coeliac disease and consumption of unusually large amounts of alcohol.

True food allergy is very rare.
Wow. Now I know where beer shits come from. Thanks HGC. I’ve actually learned something new today.
