what city are you in/near? if you can box things up yourself you are going to save an ass load of cash. $30 can be a lot or cheap depending jsut how much you want to ship.
another advantage with using a shipping company is delivery times to busier ports are generally around a week. post office ocean option is slower than a crushed snail.

It’s called dry shipping and I did it back in '09 when I moved from California to Taiwan. It does cost about 30k NT total for stuffs that take up about 2 pallets (stuffs that can fill up 2 bed/2 bath, 1100 sq ft apt without the furniture). You need to find an international dry shipping company which offers this type of service. Unfortunately I don’t know any in the 'wan.
I’d sell the stuffs here instead of moving them back to UK if I were you. Unfortunately craigslist.org is not that popular here and I’m not sure you’re gonna get a lot of responses with English only “garage sale” advertisement.
