Any news on a Taiwan (and/or international) release date… sounds interesting… and despite peoples views on content - Zhang Yimous’s films always look beautiful.
The official release date here is the 16th. I’m hoping that it either has English subtitles or that the Mandarin is modern.
I saw a bit of a “Making of…” special last night. As far as I could tell, it looks to be a strictly romantic and apolitical movie, unlike that proto-fascist One China bunk that ‘Hero’ was all about.
The Taiwan premiere was last night. Fox spent a lot of money to red carpet the National Palace Museum and had a pre-film fashion show. All the main stars - Zhang Ziyi, Liu Dehua and Takeshi Kaneshiro and Zhang himself came for the event. All the news channels had live broadcasts of the event so I’m sure you will see it in the papers today.
I’m pretty sure it will be our choice for the next weekly movie (some time next week, after my mum and sister have left). I’m definitely looking forward to the movie.
Btw, I’m moving this because discussions on Chinese/Taiwanese movies are supposed to be in the Culture and History forum

Ahhhhh, I’ve made it, #1000
Ok, its moved. Perhaps the mods need t reword the little blurb underneath the Arts & Ent and the Culture & History sections?
At the moment it reads “films, books, movies and TV shows, etc” under Arts and Entertainment.

The little blurb underneath the A & E section reads:
What else do you need to know? ![]()
Shouldn’t someone be organizing a boycott of this film by now? Jackie Chan’s remarks were ill received by the DPP crowd and Zhang Yimou is a supporter of the One China policy.
Takeshi Kaneshiro, known as Jin Chen Wu here in Taiwan, is Taiwan born and raised and even went to TAS. Yeah, he has a Japanese father but that doesn’t make him less of a Taiwanese than me.
Having seen this movie, I can say that it was eye candy. This is the nicest thing that I’ll say about it.
Zhang Yimo is a communist whore. Anyone who has seen his earlier work and now sees this flying kung fu trash that he puts out now, can only shake their head in despair. He’s truly sold out.
Takeshi Kaneshiro and Andy Lau have a fight scene that stretches the level of suspension of disbelief to a complete breaking point. They make the WWF look downright restrained in comparison.
Wait for the DVD

For once, I agree with Okami
Absolute eye candy!!! Colours, movements, nicely-cut fighting scenes… If only he could do without the story :s we kept alternating between (once again) annoying the whole theater with our giggles and writhing in agony :s
And why do sex scenes in Chinese movies have to look like speed-record gymnastics?
OK, this might be a stupid detail, but I tend to pay attention to stuff like this:
The story is supposed to be happening in Tang-Dynasty, but in one of the first scenes where Takeshi Kaneshiro is playing tug-of-war with a few whores the ceramic bowl that is attached to the rope is a Song-Dynasty bowl!
If he wants to fianlly win a price with his shallow movies he should at least pay attention to historic details
God, you think that was the worst suspension of disbelief Okami? How about the Magic Beans that can defy gravity and rebound of drums for minutes on end after one flick? How about the Remote Controlled Daggers that can fly like boomerangs or change direction mid-flight? How about not dying for like half an hour after being stabbed in the heart by a dagger?
half an hour? until snow get’s that high, it takes hours…several hours…
I can understand BroonAnle going off the wall, but who hijacked Iris’s acct.?!?!?!?!?!
7 more months of hugs and kisses,

Another suprise agreement with you. I guess the art pages back at home would call it ‘sumptuously filmed’. I think I would go for ‘duller than dishwater’. Even spiderman was more realistic.
PS can I just have the hugs?
I don’t know. I got a few laughs out of it. I can totally see a drinking game based on how many times Zhang Ziyi says “You shouldn’t have come back.” Damn right he shouldn’t have. Then the movie would have only been 30 minutes long and made a whole hell of a lot more sense.
Stop pissing on my mind! I said basically that same thing at the theater. I can’t believe I found a movie about a guy firing webs out of his wrists and swinging around the city by them more realistic than a supposed period drama.

chinese movie are horrible these days. only taiwanese movies are better
There is so much to the sensibility to Zhang Yimo films that passes you up that you focus on things like Communism and magic beans rather than deal with its plot complexity, amazing characterization and dazzling visuals.
Are you referring to House of Flying Daggers?
Bwa ha ha ha ha ha ha!!!
