I know nowadays there are many remakes, but what remakes were made by directors themselves?
I am going to play the quiz with my friends in a gathering next week.
(I know it is cheating to prepare beforehand )
I know Alfred Hitchcock made “the Man Who Knew Too Much” in 1934 and remade it in 1956 in the same title with James Stewart and Doris Day
Robert Rodriguez made “El Mariachi” in 1992 and remade it with the title “Desperado” in 1995 which stars Antonio Banderas and Salma Hayek
Cecil B. DeMille made two “The Ten Commandments” respectively in 1923 and 1956.
Are there other remakes by directors themselves?
I had to cheat and google it. “The Vanishing” by George Sluizer in 1988 (Dutch) and 1993 (English)
The original gave me nightmares

Yes, and no wimping out on the ending either (in the original).
I’m sure Luc Besson must have done at least one remake, has he not? “Les Visiteurs” perhaps? Even used the same main actors. Can anyone confirm?
Japanese horror film director, Takashi Shimizu, made “Ju-on” in 2000 and in 2004 remade its Hollywood version: “The Grudge.”
Werner Herzog remade his 1997 documentary “Little Dieter Needs to Fly,” but turned it into drama “Rescue Dawn” in 2006.
I am going to be the winner.
Robert Rodriguez did "El Mariachi"and then remade it as “Desparado”
Luc Besson redid Taxi in English. 1998 and 2004.
Paul Thomas Anderson remade his film, The Dirk Diggler Story (1988), into the much longer and more well-known Boogie Nights (1997).

I disagree that it’s a remake. The story is more of a sequel as it should be obvious from the storyline and the flashbacks from El Mariachi in Desperado.

Bcause I am not good at writing, I usually have to revise my posts.
Frank Capra made Lady for a Day in 1933 and Pocketful of Miracles in 1961 both based on Damon Runyon’s story: Madame la Gimp.
It is indeed a difficult quiz, I have to google it.
Ozu made Floating Weeds twice, first as a silent and then as a talkie in the late 1950s.
Lubitsch remade Kiss Me Again (1925) as That Uncertain Feeling (1941).
Since we’re being honest, for the second pair of films I had to look up both the years and the title of Kiss Me Again .
Leo McCarey made Love Affair (1939) and An Fair To Remeber (1957).
Thanks for everyone’s contribution.
I am going to beat my friends.
