In short, Gus Van Sant is the winner of both “the Palme d’Or” (Best Picture) and “Best Director” for the film, Elephant.
For your reference, the “Best Picture” for 2002 Cannes was Polanski’s The Pianist.
The “Best Director” award was shared by the Korean director, I m Kwon-taek for Chihwaseon (Strokes of Fire) and the American director, Paul Thomas Anderson for Punch-drunk Love.
