Any recommendations for an inexpensive mp3 player/voice recorder?
I found some music online at www.bearshare.com (yay! idiot proof!) and now want to be able to take it with me, but it would also be nice if I could also record stuff.
I purchased the “Magic Star Combo” MP3 player from 3C a couple months ago. It was 3000 for the 128, or 4000 for a 256 (megs?). It works well, but it quickly sucks the power out of the double A batteries. It can record voice as well, although the unit has to be quite close to the speaker to pick anything up. By “close” I mean 10 feet seemed okay, any further and the sound was extra “grainy”.
I’d suggest you test out a few before you buy. The operating system on mine isn’t as developed as I’d like.
Hmmm, not quite NT$3000, but I was going to suggest a Palm Zire 31 PDA. It has a headphone jack and plays MP3s, and you also get a datebook, addressbook, calculator, etc.
Thanks Ben, I’ve already looked at the Palm add-ons. I saw the mp3 kit but I’ve got a Palm M130 and I guess I can’t use it with mine… not ready to replace it just yet either. Thanks anyway.
I’m running Windows XP and I plug it into a USB port. It shows as an extra “flash memory drive kinda do-hickey thingy”. I just cut and paste MP3 files into that drive. Right now I’ve got about 3 - half hour pimsleur lessons, as well as about 25 (roughly three and a half minute long) songs on it. I’ve also got a couple of cheesy voice tests on it.
What I don’t like about it is that I can’t fast forward through tracks to find a particular spot in a file. That’s a feature I would find useful.

The Zire 31 actually has MP3 capability built in, so no add-ons needed. But, if you aren’t ready to replace your M130, then it’s kind of a moot point.
Bought one about 2 months ago. It’s an “Alfa” MP3 Player/Recorder/Radio.
Stores 256 MB, takes mp3 recording samples (ultra sensitive mic so the sound is really good even if recorded from far away), and a radio tuner to boot. Takes a single AAA battery which lasts a long while, has a dial so you can fast forward or rewind the track, multiple menu tweaks, and so on. I’ve been nothing but happy with it. Don’t exactly remember, but I think I paid just under 4K for it, too.
I bought one a week or two ago and I’m very happy with it. It was the smallest I saw (or close) which is the main reason I like it so much. About the size of a matchbox but thinner. Very light. It holds 256MB which I find about right for 5 CDs of music. Records voice and has an FM radio too. You have to recharge it. It’s too small for batteries (so perhaps not best for long distance travel/camping etc). It has a neck chain thing, which sounds dumb but is actually really good for stuff like cycling, which is what I intend to use it most for. Good easy to work controls. OSD is Englih, but manual.
Name on the front is Piere Cardin Paris (so obviously made in Taiwan).
