My comparison of South Taiwan and SE Korea (Busan/Daegu) and Japan

I can agree with this 100%

Hope you get a chance to try some local regional food

I live (part-time) in the Tokachi area of Hokkaido. The food here is incomparably better (and cheaper) than the food in Taiwan. I was starkly reminded of that the evening I returned here after months in Taiwan. I had a several course meal at a local restaurant including five types of fresh-off-the-boat sushi for the equivalent of 600 NT. Every bite was a treat. In fact in all the years I’ve spent here I have yet to eat anything that wasn’t fresh and prepared with care. And the beer . . .

It’s cheaper, overall higher living standard. Was talking young Taiwanese worker on workers day (Friday) and how bad is it in Taiwan, when Korean and Japanese workers make more but things cost less (transport in Japan is higher though compared to Taiwan)

yes, why craft beer in Taiwan costs so much??? Japan has lot of choices too, and in Busan besides the big national ones some nice local brews.

Probably. Korea has been extremely successful in the past decade or two. Cars, electronics, and the entertainment industry. Replacing Japanese products to some extent. I can’t recall using any other products made in Taiwan that I can see. I’m sure some chips in my laptops and phones. Value wise, much lower than Korean refrigerators, dish washers, washers and dryers, TVs, phones, and cars that are everywhere.

Taiwan’s moves are stealth moves—it’s the stuff you can’t see. :slightly_smiling_face:

Seriously though there’s heaps written on this topic: how the industrial structures of Taiwan and Korea have differed, with very different strategies. This is not new.

Guy

I went into an electronics store in Seoul a couple of months ago. The branded Korean household goods looked way fancier than most of the stuff in Taiwan. LG washing machines , refrigerators, that kind of thing.. They also had a lot of robots they were marketing. It definitely felt like quite a step from Taiwan. Their Kia cars are better than anything produced in Taiwan also.

Taiwan was always cheap and bad compared to Korea an Japan. Now is expensive and bad. Also anything that is no bad in Taiwan has to be “premium” and you have to pay premium prices.

Their cars do look amazing. The new electronic models from Kia and Hyundai look very flashy. Teslas look so lame in comparison, boring even. I have no idea why every every rich person in Taiwan wanks themselves off to Teslas, its truly bizarre.

Taiwan does produce some stuff, AC units, household stuff etc. But yea it usually doesn’t look as fancy.

I was contemplating buying a Taiwanese fridge but ultimately it looked a bit old fashioned and more importantly the door space just wasn’t fit for the job, wasnt deep enough.

That’s what Taiwan had going for it. It wasn’t the best quality but it was cheap. Now you get the same poor quality but pay a lot.

I also see more immigrants in Korea and Japan, like this bus driver. She spent a lot of time to learn

Unfortunately I have to agree. So much stuff has ratcheted up in price in Taiwan now but quality hasn’t often kept pace.
