My Internet Provider just phoned me, told me to stop downloa

To stop downloading illegal stuff. They said they got an email from America or somewhere saying that my IP address was downloading something it shouldn’t. I just told him he’d need to be more specific than that, because I’m always downloading something. I have bittorrent so I’m guessing someone tracked me through that? I dunno. It’s the first time I’ve been phoned like that. I have no porn on my computer…so no worries there.

Which ISP do you use?

Damn! Did you get a bum download recently? Or a torrent that never finished?

I use cable. Taoyuan CATV.

I haven’t even had my torrent turned on recently. Last thing I downloaded was SpaceBalls a few days ago. And before that nothing for awhile.

I don’t think IP service providers will phone you like that. Whenever you get a call like that, there is a very high likelihood it is the beginning of a setup for a scam. Just my two bits.

Most of the time it’s just a warning to scare you and try and get you to stop torrenting. I got one once but mine was an e-mail and I never stopped and nothing became of it. They would have to go through a lot and have a lot of proof that you download a lot of illegal material ie copywritten material, not porn.

You should use peer-guardian to mask/block your ip addy when torrenting. I tend to stay away from public sites and use private trackers now, as there is always someone in the swarm screwin’ around. They will try to flood your connection to slow your DL or tracking what you DL, etc.

get a vpn

Fuckin’ Hades!
Have you called back?
My own cable company is leaning on me for, and after six years of being a customer, I feel like walking into their office with fire extinguishers & pepper spray!

Take a movie of them with your cell phone and post it on youtube… oh, wait…

Actually this happened to me once. Its real. Tell them maybe you left your wireless open.

Suggest you run Peer Guardian, that might help somewhat. And stick to the BitTorrent or eMule p2p networks.

The US wants no betel nut girls and no p2p here. A white guy would make a nice poster child so take a few precautions.

Taoyuan cable is owned by taiwan broadband corp who are owned by an american company…

but some countries are now activaely puersuing those downloading copywrite content belonging to others…

Who knows maybe this is just the beginning

Hi,

You might wanna check this study from the University of Washington.
Its an interesting read.
dmca.cs.washington.edu/index.html

They demonstrate that the monitoring techniques of bit torrent by the RIAA etc. are very bad, and can not be trusted.
Everybody could easily be accused of file sharing and receive a DMCA takedown notice, even if he has never even used bit torrent.
When the guys from the university observed bit torrent trackers for their study, they received dozens of DMCA takedown notices, even they never downloaded or shared any files… Also other computers and even printers in their network were accused of file sharing…

So, if your ISP calls you again, you can deny everything, and quote that study… let them deliver “real” evidence first…

Cheers,
Mr. Rice
