My laptop is making a weird whirring sound

I think it may be the fan that’s supposed to cool it down when it starts to get hot except that it’s been running (for months!) and just doesn’t stop.

What can I do?

turn on your air con
get a cooling pad
or get the fan repaired

What sort of machine is it? I’ve been reading lately about problems with Dells.

Too cool for that. Aircon was on all summer and I think that’s when it started running all the time.

Thought of that. Should pick one up. But I think the problem is that it’s stuck on ‘on’.

Was hoping it would be easier than having to take it somewhere. :s

Thanks anyway.

Compaq Presario 2100

Thanks, Squid.

braxtonhicks, I usually find when I have a computer tech problem it’s much better to go the the make’s forum rather than use forumosa. Although the apple users on forumosa are second to none, I’ve used apple, xbox, dlink and BenQ forums more successfully. Try notebookreview.com/forums/fo … FORUM_ID=3 or google compaq forums and I’m sure you’ll get the answers you’re looking for.

Great suggestion and tip amos. Thanks.

About twice a year I clean out the built up gunk on my laptop’s fans and they run much quieter after that. Using a Q-tip to swab things down (when the laptop is off!) is what I do.

Only useful if Compaq have improved things since I bought my laptop a few years ago, only to find that it disconnected from the internet every few minutes. I tried their ‘help’ site, only to learn that the modems in Compaq laptops are specific to the geological area in which they are sold.

Eventually I gave up and called their helpline, where I learned eventually that it had been shipped with a non-working modem driver. Their solution was to get online and download the one I wanted, with my virtually non-functioning modem.

I threw it away not long after I landed in Taiwan, and replaced it with a local brand. I think the Taiwan computer contained fewer components from the mainland, and it has been more satisfactory in every respect.

But it did develop a squeaky fan problem, which I got fixed under warranty.

Figure out what it will cost to fix your machine, and ask how much longer it will serve your needs. Is it worth spending the money? Everything started failing on my Compaq after a couple of years. Replacing it has probably worked out cheaper.

But since I’m here for a few years more a laptop is not really the right thing to have anyway. I recently got a nice big desktop machine from Nam, who advertises here. Very happy with both the machine and the service.

Just a thought…

Some fans will automatically come on with high CPU load. A lot of games as well as SETI@HOME will keep your CPU at 100% all the time. When this happens, your fan will obviously be on all the time.

Check your CPU usage in Task Manager. CTRL-SHIFT-ESC and click the “Performance” tab. If it’s at 100% then go to the “Options” tab and see what process keeps the high CPU on it. That will be the cause.
