My manager told me that I rarely socialize with my co-workers and displays other weird behavior

yes, otherwise its illegal. they have to pay you for the notice period

I think it’s prudent to ask someone to leave immediately and still pay for the notice period.

If you are working there and know is being fired, would you work well? Or would you try to sabotage the workplace? Like say you work at McDonalds you’d start giving customers extra helping of fries, like say for a small fries you’d just put a big gob of it into the bag, then have a ton of them left inside the paper sack.

This is why employers escort the fired worker out immediately.

Just a note to say that when I was younger situations like yours were a lot worse for me, but it gets better over time. It sounds like you have a terrible boss, are only paid modestly, and should be competitive for other positions (especially now as it’s harder to get native English speakers in and many are wearing out). The challenge of staying calm is real and I’m not trying to dismiss that, but this is a good time to work on coping strategies, because you’ll almost surely work in other challenging places with terrible bosses.

For me, these included:
-The regular “make job searching your job” advice
-The additional “eat well, get your sleep, and exercise” advice
-Getting immersive hobbies that get you out of your mind
-Accepting that life is going to include a lot of suck through probably mid-February, but not forever
-Finding places you can vent that aren’t just loved ones or coworkers (so actually, an internet forum is a fine place to write many posts about how horrible your employer is)

It is worthwhile to learn how to deal with toxic situations. It’s a balancing act. It may be worth your mental wellbeing to just give notice, but I also feel like hanging in there a little longer is probably good if you can swing it.

Keep on keeping on!

I think the manager was trying to humiliate me in hopes of making me resign in December 2021, so that he wouldn’t have to pay severance and year-end bonus.

The manager is already starting to have 1 on 1 meetings with us and he will also let us know how much we get for our year-end bonuses this week. Based on what @izzy stated, it does seem as though my manager will lay me off this week and pay my salary for January 2022. I personally think this week will be my last at my current job.

I just now realized this thread and the other thread are the same person. It’s probably a good thing if you leave. Your manager doesn’t sound nice.

I just want to get my year-end bonus first. The company will let us know how much we get for our year-end bonuses this week.

Go away and never look back.
Which one more important? Mental health or severance check? For me it was always mental health.
If your option is severance check,…
If last year you attend weiya then do so this year.
If last year you did not attend, then AWOL this year, not changing your game.

It’s almost CNY so why give them the satisfaction. If you are on mandatory 13 or 14 months you should hang around till then . Anything extra such as performance bonus is going to be gravy. Wait till you get all due for end of year and then as soon as that is done issue formal resignation notice by email. Well that’s what I would do.

Hang in there man year-end bonuses and severance is worth the shit as it’ll cover at least a few month’s pay for you to take your time finding a new job!

Not only that but if you are let go you can get employment insurance which will cover 60% of your previous salary for 6 months. If you resign you get nothing.

Earlier this morning, the company decided to cancel this year’s year-end weiya (尾牙). It said it was due to rising Covid-19 cases.

This year’s weiya just got cancelled!

Last Friday, the owner came to review pay raises for 2022 and discuss employees’ performance with the General Manager. Since this Monday, our Accounting dept. has been preparing the income tax documents for all employees for 2021.

Once that’s done, the manager will likely let us know our year-end bonuses later this week or early next week.

Do you generally take the last few days of work off? Assuming I end up resigning at the end of this month, I’m tempted to use up most of my leave.

It is normal.
My company do it last year.
Plan a biggie and then cancelled.

This year all done within a week notice and no chance to cancel it.

My company also does the same. My boss just gives me the year end party money in like august because he says “no one cares about party, everyone wanna enjoy the holidays and dont care about fake interacting”. Well, he is honest

I miss Taiwanese banquet a lot. Plenty of sea food, sweet plum juice and Taiwan beer. When I was younger, I never refuse a girl and a free food. I got it, people take it as obligation. But for me was a party time. Get drunk and tell jokes. The best deal is you will move on, get a bit wasted and enjoy time.

And stop overthink. You gotta chill

It turns out I was wrong. The company won’t be letting us know how much we get for our year-end bonus this week.

I also have a bad feeling that my manager may resort to other tactics, such as giving me an absurdly low year-end bonus to make me resign. (I think that he won’t give me anywhere close to the 3.5 months’ pay that he gave me for the year-end bonus in Jan. 2021.)

I’ve also continued my job search.

I understand that there is a lot of resentment towards your manager at the moment, but not everyone is malicious and trying to get you. if the bonus is lower, is it really cuz he is out to get you? you said yourself the company has less and less sales… where is he supposed to get the money for the bonus from?
