Broad conclusion, IIRC, was that forward control vans are inherently more dangerous than bonneted pickups like the Zace and Freeca. T4 and Hiace are both forward control, but they’re sold in markets that require crash testing, and they are very probably safer than the local forward control offerings.

Hard to say whether they’re safer than the local bonneted pickups. I doubt accident statistics or crash test results will be available for the latter.

But I reckon a bonnet (hood) is your best bet.

A mate has a freeca, and that’s a no, as he at 170CM has issues fitting in, and I am some 15 cm taller than him. Also, it lacks the third row.

Old VW Transporter with a 1 ton weight in the back
Rather someone else than me, I’m thinking.

Ouch! It still doesn’t look good!

In fact I can’t find a single crash test result for this VW Transporter or Caravelle anywhere. I know vans and trucks fall under a different category and aren’t tested by many institutions.

This one looks a little better, but still not a thorough test.

Some information from Folksam

I believe the reliable European NCAP don’t test this type of vehicle.

The T3 is a deathtrap.
