OK, so after all these years here, there still a few things that I jones on from back home, that I’ve never been able to replicate.
Suddenly, the other day, I realized, hey, I’m a pretty smart guy and I know my way around, what the hell, maybe if I can get a little creative, why, there’s no reason at all I shouldn’t be able to satisfy these cravings.
So, one thing that I really miss from when I was home is Corn Flakes for breakfast.
So I decided, damn it! If I can just be a little adaptable, I can do it, baby!
OK, so first I had to source supplies.
Now, one of the biggest problems that would continue to plague me throughout the entirety of this project was simply this:
People in Taiwan don’t really eat Corn Flakes the way we do.
First obstacle?
Finding a really good bowl.
I was stymied at the outset, but then, after spending a lot of time thinking, and wandering around countless night markets and department stores, I had a major epiphany.
A. People in Taiwan like to eat soup
B. People in Taiwan like to eat noodles
C. Soup and noodles are eaten in…bowls!!!
Suddenly I realized I was really onto something here.
So I went to the day market and found the lady who sells dishes and utensils and stuff, and sure enough, she had all kinds of bowls.
As I stood there, perusing her stock, I realized something… I didn’t need to tell her it was for cereal! If I could just stay mum and buy the bowl, she’d never know…and I’d have a bowl!!!
Needless to say, after finally aceing this crucial stage, I was pretty pleased with myself.
So I took a couple of days off as a reward, although I never lost sight of the prize.
Eye of the Tiger.
Stay tuned for Episode 2…The Quickening-Spoonquest!!!
Sorry chief but you have made a fatal mistake. There are basically two types of bowls available at the local market - rice bowls and noodle soup bowls. Neither is acceptable for the ultimate cereal experience. The rice bowl is too small. Therefore you have to refill it numerous times. The noodle soup bowl, while capable of handling a large portion of cereal, is not engineered correctly to produce the ultimate experience. Carefully note the inclination of the bowl walls. Due to the sharp rise and extended height of the walls proper “scoopage” is not achieved. Also, the bowls do not allow the cereal to breath properly thus the cereal’s bouquet is not fully released.
You must obtain an imported bowl or an internationally designed bowl to reach cereal nirvana.
Sheesh. How are you going to get the right spoon if you didn’t know how to find a proper bowl?
I’m with TheLostSwede. Ikea has some great cereal bowls and spoons. The big round soup spoons work best. Now you just have to change your taste in cereals. Corn Flakes? Come on.
I eat everything out of the receptacle it came in or from paper cups. I’m not very domestic. I had some stuff like plates but they all fell on the floor and broke.
That’s what Canadians call Kraft Macaroni & Cheese. In college (Boston) we called it Blue Box, to clarify that any substitution is simply unacceptable. Especially if it’s organic. Some things are just not supposed to be natural. I think it may contain some crack.
