First, great forum, I´m glad to be here and meet you all.
As to my question: I am 32 years old and a Ph.D.-student from Germany. I moved to Taibei this month with my fiancee. She will be working at academia sinica in a biology lab as a post-doc (and getting a regular income), while I am here on a student visa through Tamkang University. I am officially here as an exchange student to learn chinese (which I will do) and to work on my doctoral thesis. However, I would like to supplement our income with some work of my own. While I am of german nationality, I have spent several years in the US and have acquired a level of english that is considered very good by fellow students and professors alike. I have also tutored high-school kids in Germany.
So here are my hopefully very specific questions so as not to waste your time:
Can I get legal work on an exchange student visa or do I have to get a work visa through a language school?
I do not have any official qualifications, like a TESL. Do you think I should get one before applying?
Do I even have a chance, since I am technically not a native speaker?
While I read it is not recommended to work illegally for a language school, what about private tutoring? (In Germany, this is usually done off the radar and noone complains.)
This is all I can think of right now. Of course, I´ll be looking into teaching german, but that´s not in very high demand I´m told. Any help you guys and gals can give me is appreciated.

Like fm said, I don’t think there’s much chance of you getting legal work teaching English, simply because your passport isn’t from an English-speaking country, that’s pretty much the bottom line.
Even so, there’s lots of (relatively) easy $ to be made teaching privately, and yes, those classes are pretty much treated the way you mentioned.

Da du mit nem Studentenvisa in Taiwan bist, kannst du offiziell auch keinen Job annehmen.
Engl. Lehrer ist immer so eine Sache, grundsätzlich sind die jetzt strenger geworden mit den Vorraussetzungen, du musst entweder aus US, UK, Australien oder Südafrika sein, damit sie dich offiziell als native Speaker anerkennen. Der Markt für engl. Lehrer ist meiner Meinung nach überfüllt und voll von native Speakers.
Wenn du aber TOEFL, TESL oder wie die alle heissen vorweisen kannst, erhöhst du deine Chancen als engl. Lehrer angenommen zu werden.
Privat Tutor, da sehe ich schon mehr Chancen, obwohl muss du dir auch im klaren darüber sein, dass Deutsch als Fremdsprache in Taiwan nicht wirklich “beliebt” ist.
Stundenpreis für Deutschlehrer ist eindeutig niedriger als Englischlehrer, bitte korrigiert mich wenn ich mich irre.
Da du schon dein Magister hast (auch ohne Arbeitserfahrung darfst du in Taiwan arbeit suchen), rate ich dir einen Job in Taiwan zu suchen. Die Firma erledigt dann alle Formalitäten und du bekommst deinen Working Visa + ARC.

danke für die Antwort. Ich hab mir das mit dem Muttersprachler sein schon gedacht, wobei ich mir im Zweifelsfall bei einem persönlichen Gespräch schon vorstellen könnte, dass sie mich nehmen (weil ich mit fast wie ein Muttersprachler anhöre). Mir würde aber Privatunterricht ohnehin reichen, da ich an meiner Diss arbeiten muss. Ich muss mich mit den Jobs also nicht komplett finanzieren. Danke für den Link, werd ich mal ausprobieren.
spreche auch engl. wie ein Native, oder mehr wie ein Kanadier xD, aber nachdem sie meinen Passport gesehen haben, hieß es was sie sind ja kein Native, wir kontaktieren sie xD…
