I used to have Nero 5.5 burning ROM.

The guy who fixed my computer replaced it with Nero StartSmart which looks quite different.

Is this a newer version, or something complementary?

I think you still have the regular Nero as well. Just go to Start–> Programs–> Nero–> Nero 6 ultra Edition (or something like that)–>Nero Bruning Rom

StartSmart is just an interface to the Nero suite. Click on the flaming Nero icon (top left) to get information about your product updates and serial numbers, etc.
