Neutering my dog

My dog is about 5 months old now. I have noticed is is becoming attracted to other dogs.

I read that the best time to spay a dog is before 6 months of age.

Does anyone know a good vet in Jiayi I could go to to do this? And how much does it cost?
… is is…to to…
Looks as if you’re typing with one hand there Lo Bo To. Either that or you’re extremely nervous. Don’t worry, it won’t hurt a bit.

The operation for a bitch will cost NT$2,000 - 3,000. Neutering a male dog is cheaper. You may be able to get a subsidy for spaying (not sure about Jiayi - ask a vet). If you do not have an ROC ID, you might have to get an ROC citizen to apply for the subsidy for you, which will entail registering the dog in that person’s name. If a subsidy is available, apply for it straight away - if you delay 10 days or more you may lose the chance.

You’re being a responsible and caring dog companion, Lo Bo To. Good on yer!

Hope you find a great vet.

Ooops. I meant neuter

My dog is a male.

I went to the vet today to get my dog neutered and he told me that you shoudn’t neuter a dog before 9 months of age.

According to my research it is in fact beneficial to neuter your dog before reaching sexual maturity (My dog is at that point now)

At an early age dogs will recover faster.

It will become easier to train and they will have a better attention span.

Less likely to impregnate a bitch and contribute to an already vastly overpopulated dog population (especially Taiwan)

Less likely to fight with other dogs (My dog got in a fight today after a dog started biting him resulting in a nice cut on his upper lip)

Apparently in the past (10-20 years ago) the advice given was to wait 'till 6-8 months of age because of the danger involved with anasthetic (In the past there was a higher risk of a puppy dying of hypothermia during the operation). But with new anasthetics this danger is no longer.

Will or has anyone ever had a Taiwanese vet neuter a dog at the age of 5 months or less?

The thing that I am worried about is that maybe the average Taiwanese vet is living in the dark ages of veterinary medicine and doesn’t have the education or modern medicine (anasthetic) to perform an operation on a puppy.

I don’t want to wait because my dog is starting to mount other dogs and I don’t want him to impregnate any other dogs and their puppies end up on the street.

In other countries, vets neuter and spay kittens and puppies at six weeks of age with no detrimental effect at all; in fact, as you point out, it is better for the animal to get it done as early as possible.

Our vets spay females at three months but males at six months, as they say the males can have problems urinating if the op is done too early. I lent both of them a video of the early spaying and neutering, and one is now willing to give it a try.

But I don’t know of any in Taiwan who will neuter a male under six months. Sorry. :idunno:

I got my dog neutered today.

I’ll post the address of the vet when he is all better. The guy who did it seems very competant and loves animals.

They didn’t give him one of those cone shaped (Elizabethan?) collars so he doesn’t lick himself though. Is that normal?

Poor guy. I stole his manhood. Better for him in the end though. Wish him luck. :scooby: :scooby: :scooby:

Of the hundred or so dogs we’ve had neutered, only a handful licked the site of the surgery, so it’s quite common for vets to not give a cone or antibiotics unless the dog shows a need for them.

Do keep an eye on the area, and don’t let your dog gett too bored over the next few days.

Great that you found a vet who could do the job. Let us know how the dog does.

Lucky was neutered about 20 days ago. He didn’t lick at all. In fact he behaved like if nothing happened. He’s still lifting his leg up to urinate too. Good thing he doesn’t quite understand everything because I nag him everytime he sniffs at a female.

I thought you should wait until after the females first menstratution…guess I was wrong.

That is ‘old school’.

In the States and elsewhere, puppies and kittens as young as 6 weeks old are desexed with no detrimental effect to the animal (but they tend to grow up leaner and longer legged).

Just like in that novel about the…umm…singers of old…the ones that are de-sexxed to keep their singing voices. They were taller and thinner than others as well. Interesting…how does losing ones sex make one taller?

Having had 20 pups, she’s long overdue, and it shouldn’t be a problem.

Oh and good for you! :bravo:
