Hi, I been searching online and in my mind the 2012 Ford escape have the best price for the bang ( maybe its build in Taiwan…? ) Can anyone suggest something in same price range that might be better?
Also anything I need to look out for when buying a new car? Any advance would be highly appreciated.
The Ford Escape generally suffers the greatest depreciation of any SUV on the Taiwan market, coupked with poor economy and greater unreliability than some other brands, which may or may not improve with this latest model.
I would say that the best bang for the buck is the Honda CRV, which is also an onroad only model, but drives better, is more economical, has greater residual value by far, a nicer and more usable interior.
Trust me. The Honda will cost less over three to four years.

You can check out the Toyota RAV4 if there are any available. I personally prefer the Honda however for the better ride, and better interior. Residuals will be similar in both.

Would you suggest the 4wheel drive over other models on these mid size SUVs?
Are you going to be driving on crappy mountain roads (but staying on road)?
Yes - get 4WD/AWD
No - get FWD (pretty sure all options in this class is FWD)

No, I wouldn’t. The disadvantages of four wheel drives in Taiwan almost always outweigh the advantages. Also, any of these fore mentioned models are almost useless in four wheel drive versions. These mentioned are all soft-roaders, which means they are primarily designed to manage on-road only.
If you are a typical driver in Taiwan, then the likelihood of you ever needing four wheel drive is likely almost nil.
wow thats expensive. Here an escape 4cylinder is bout i would say 25,000 usd or so and a Q5 2.0 is bout 39,000 for a basic one.
I like the escape, it drives well and my bud here has had his for years , no major problems. American vehicles get back bout 10 to 15pct of its value after five years here, so probably same as there, its best to drive it into the ground. Don’t buy it for resale value.
Yeah not sure if the Escape (on demand) 4wd is any good. The Q5 has quattro fulltime all wheel drive which i hear is very good. Still these are , like you said, all soft roaders, not for heavy duty offroading. For that you need a jeep or landrover or Gwagon or the such i think.
Hey what bout that SKODA? They seem to have a nice thing going in the YETI no?
Hi everyone, after further review and all, I have made my mind up on the 4wheel drive, this car is just the cheapest around, hope I don’t have major problems with it. Thanks for all the tips guys.
Personally I would say firstly that there are 4WDs, and 4WDs. If we are talking the lighter, soft-roader such as the Ford Escape, then I would tend to disagree that it’s the cheapest 4WD around.
I would personally state that the Honda CRV is the cheapest 4WD around, simply because its by far the most fuel efficient, holds its price reasonably well, in fact, far better than the Ford, and is more reliable.
These factors combined make the CRV the strongest soft-roader around as far as I’m concerned.
I would typically, strongly advise someone in your situation to consider a Honda CRV which is in the same range as your budget, even if that’s a vehicle which is one to two years old as it will save you money in the long run.
Agree. I drove escape for 7 yrs (2002-2009) and it gave me lots of problems, maybe it’s because my car was the 1st batch that was locally built. I’m sure ford twn has done many improvements to the current model but do u know that they still use the same chassis and body style as the escape produced 10 yrs ago? In the state, ford escape is already going to the 3rd gen…
so if u havn’t bought the escape, then try look for a 2009/10 CRV 2.4 2wd or even 4wd… I’m pretty sure u can buy it around $700-750k as the new is around a mill…they are more reliable and hold resale value better…
I haven’t bought the car yet but for a million it’s really hard to find something good in size n new. I don’t mind buying used, but used car seem hard here, unless car max is here…anyone good used car dealersh?
You should perhaps think of car sourcing the other way around, which is ‘does anyone know where I can find a good used car’?
A dealer will not dictate the quality of his cars. He’s there to make money, not care too much about the quality of his vehicles.
A million? That’s a lot to spend on anything like a Honda CRV, Ford Escape, or any other softroader. I’m absolutely positive you can find a good deal on a used car within that budget. A very nice CRV should be had for a few hundred thousand less than that.
