Just bought me an Asus netbook. The store installed Win7 (English) and MS Office 2007 (Chinese).
I’ve also used ninite.com to download most of the software that I need. While I accept, but don’t quite fathom why, the store put on Office in Chinese (I’ll have to uninstall it and install an English version) I don’t understand why Google Earth is in Chinese?
Somewhere in the Language and Regional settings you need to change the “Language for non unicode programs” from Chinese to English. That may or may not be a silver bullet though it’s very likely at least part of what’s causing your woes. Hopefully more tech savvy folks will be along to shed more light in due course.
All of the Google apps that I’ve installed comes with language options at install (you have to look at the webpage before hitting the download/install button). So, if you missed it the first time (same with Skype), no problem, just re-install them and look for the language drop-down option this time.
Hey Baas, Open Google Earth and click on Tools (4th tab at top), then Options (bottom option in drop down list). Now click on the “General” tab (last tab). The second section on the left is the language setting. Click on the drop down list there and choose English.
OP’s problem might also be related to where he has listed as his current location. This can affect what version of websites come up by default (.com vs.tw/.cn) and what language version of software is offered for download by default. OP should go into control panel/clock, language, region/ change location. Select an English-speaking country as your current location.
Thanks fellas. I’ve tried all of the above, to no avail.
I think (pretty sure) they installed a pirated Windows 7 (Chinese version) and changed the language to English. When it starts up and shuts down, there are Chinese characters instead of English. Perhaps that’s why the software downloads in a Chinese version??
What are my options? Uninstall and install a clean, English Windows 7? I’ll admit, the Win7 running on my laptop was also installed by another shop a few months back, but it’s deffo English and all the software I downloaded subsequently came through in English.
Better to do a fresh install now, rather than down the line, right?
IF your notebook is new it should come with a version of Win 7 right? Cant you take it back and demand English? Also everything Microsoft has to be in English as well. IN other words you shouldnt be able to have the OS in English but Office in Chinese.
It does look like your operating system is in Chinese to me
