Of interest to me at least, and perhaps a few people here. Scientists at CERN think they have found Higgs-Boson. I personally thought they would be spending a few more years in order to find it, or they would have to go back to the drawing board.
Now, it would be interesting to know what further questions this discovery opens up.

I don’t pretend to understand the theoretical implications, but I guess that does make it worth spending a shitload of cash on the LHC. So congrats to the physics geeks at CERN.

Quantum physics being the way it is, I can’t help wondering if they find these things simply because they’re looking for them. Maybe there is no GUT. We create it by the way we observe the universe.

Yes, it’s good news but I wish they’d stop calling it the god particle (that’s the media, not the scientists I think). It just winds the religious fundamentalists up.
One of my sons has actually visited the site and said it’s an amazing place. The thing that fascinated me was that they actually create matter. I thought they just smashed atoms together to see what came out of the collision, but in fact the atoms whirl around so fast that the energy is converted to additional matter on the atoms, and it’s this that smashes off when the atoms collide. Or something like that. 
Yes that was pretty interesting, being the opposite of what happens in nuclear fission when energy is created from matter. Matter and energy really are two sides of the same coin and I guess the Higgs is an important part of that given as it is interaction with the Higgs field and bosons which creates mass.
Higgs-boson walks into a church. The priest sees Higgs-boson and immediately runs up to him shouting "Hey! You can’t come in here! What do you think you are doing?’
Higgs-boson replies: “Without me, how can you have mass?”

CERN does good things like employing Tim Berners Lee while he invented html/www, but the news is all ‘may have found the particle’. A few months ago they were claiming to have proved Einstein’s theory that nothing could travel faster than the speed of light to be wrong.
It turned out Einstein was right and CERN’s data was wrong.
It’s difficult to separate real science from PR these days. Quantum physicists have to compete with climate scientists and everyone else for funding. ![]()

Also, the god particle is taken from Lederman calling it the goddamn particle. Afraid of upsetting Americans by swearing they chose to confuse the living fuck out of them by referencing God. Now every knuckle dragging door humping good ole boy with a set of ears and not much in between is running about talking 'bout religion and what have you.
Basically if they don’t find it it means that all of physics is a load of made up old bollocks (which it is) and they’d have to start all over again trying to explain how their ridiculous puzzle pieces fit together if you just jam the pieces hard enough.

I find it ironic that some people require the existence of a particular particle to justify the existence of all the other particles when it would be more sensible to require the existence of a field or wave/vibration to explain the idea of mass. I’m sticking to my theory that God is a vibration, not particular.

Crop circles are made by drunk Cornish men. The Higgs boson has not been found. An anomaly which could be the particle, albeit with a VERY stringent P value, is still an anomaly which could be the particle.
We are dealing with probability here, which is something humans struggle with even on a very simple level.

Which is why, to all intents and purposes to the average layman, it is considered found. Trying to explain probability and observation across the front page of a broadsheet is pretty impossible stuff.
Anyway, CERN are now concentrating their efforts on figuring out how to fit in 22 stations with a pint at each station into a day. That’s a minimum of 11.5 hours, assuming that a maximum of half an hour is spent at each station and the very next train is caught. The statistical probability of a pub crawl starting at 11 am is between slight and impossible, and there is no margin for error seeing as the trains stop at about midnight. Considering the amount of errors made are directly proportionate to the amount of alcohol consumed, then it appears the very fabric of time will have to be traversed in order to complete this hellish ordeal.
Or spread it over two days, which defeats the point. One hell of a task!

Plus there are no pubs in Bourneville as they were quakers, and the nearest pub in King’s Norton, The Barton Arms is a good 5 min walk. 
In all probability this post is probably, statistically speaking, probable, if I let monkey’s type it for me. Mainly because I way too busy getting drunk and making crop circles.
I don’t understand any of it, I just like it. Still confuses me I can’t walk through a wall, because of mass. But I’m Cornish. Thinking about that, pasties… A good pasty can display more mass than it’s volume, I think that is dark matter, no wait, it’s just a bit of steak.
