Anyone else sign up for a “Next TV” internet tv box? I applied for one at a 7-11 (actually my wife did). It’s free except for the movies, which are pay-per-views. Unfortunately the menus are all in Chinese, but I can see two channels and some MOD movies. They’re giving away these boxes because Taiwan’s version of the FCC won’t give them a broadcasting license. They sent a guy to do the setup and he even sold us a wifi antenna for the box ($650) because my router is on the 2nd floor and the tv is downstairs. Picture quality isn’t that great because I don’t have a fast enough connection, but watchable.
Is this box hackable? Maybe it can be re-purposed for other uses?

I’m not sure if the promotion is still running but for a limited time you can sign up and watch everything completely free for 3 months and they also give you a $100 voucher for 7-11 or Sogo after hooking up the box. We signed up 2 boxes for the house and one for the office, I’m sure we will carry on using them after the free trial since pricing is quite reasonable and they will still have some free content.
It works great, I just really wish they had surround sound and I would never rent DVDs again. Pay movie content is WAY better than MOD but there is almost no live channel content. Also a pretty huge selection of western TV series like Top Gear, Lost, Desperate Housewives, Heroes etc. and a bunch of BBC stuff.
On 50M fiber from CHT we have two boxes running at once with no lag or stuttering, occasionally the box crashes but you get what you pay for.
i considered that but then i went with the 3 in 1 package at cht…mod/net/phone for $1000…have over 200 channels on mod, ok english selection…does the job for me, not too pricey either…
Not really much to consider, the boxes are free and there’s no subscription. I guess they are hoping that people will get hooked on the free service (it worked on us).
