NHI Coverage for cancer

just wanted to ask what coverage do you get from NHI for cancer treatment? Is chemotherapy covered? I have read from a different blog site that chemotherapy is not covered.

In general definitely yes (as of a couple of years ago) but there may possibly be variations depending on the kind of chemo–sometimes the newest most preferable treatments aren’t covered, for some things.

Where did you see that?

thanks for the feedback. to me, NHI coverage have not been very straightforward and ambiguous most of the time, you can’t find a list of illnesses and their coverage amounts, at least ball park figures.

I’ve read this blog (with the link below) which says chemotherapy is not covered by the NHI. Again, i am not sure if there is any difference between a chemotherapy treatment and targetted drugs that help in cancer treatment, i have read some news articles within the NHI portal that NHI does cover some of these targetted drugs for some types of cancer (i.e. gastric, breast).

Yeah that is wrong, inasmuch as some chemotherapy was definitely covered as of 2019. I think you’d have to go over this with the doctor, they’ll explain what is covered and what you need to pay for in detail. In general though I never heard that chemo isn’t covered. “Prolonged treatments over a month long” sounds unlikely as well, depending on the situation. I think they got their signals crossed with a few things.

Thanks, gives me a little bit of a peace of mind, just in case .

I have company group insurance as well on top of my NHI - but sadly only covers cancer surgery, hospitalization, and other post-operative care, but not chemotherapy. We all know the bulk of cancer treatment costs goes to chemotherapy

Chemo should be covered as my mom went through it.

You get one free P.E.T. scan with every cancer. After that, it’s out of your own pocket. C.T.'s can be free but may be up to the physician’s discretion. Expect humourless, impersonal service from hospital staff. Tipping is not encouraged.
