NJ Drivers Can No longer renew Lic by Mail. What did you do?

With these new useless anti terror laws, all NJ residents have to apply for Drivers Licenses in person. It is either a Law or an accepted convention that Ex Pats maintain their residency of the last state they have lived in. That includes voting and driving rights. I have parked my legal address at family’s home for years and have all my legal stuff sent there including Bank Accounts, Professional Licenses and other things. .

My mother would send me all the forms and I’d renew them just like that . Now I can no longer renew by mail. I also can’t come back to the states for financial reasons or as luck would have it Taiwanese Family Emergencies prevented our last trip. Has any one found a way to renew his license via mail?

It’s ironic that I have created 4 souls and bestowed upon them the precious gift of American Citizenship yet, I can’t even find a legal way to renew my driver’s License.
I’m about to start an old fashioned letter writing conversation with the NJ DOT showing them proof of my Identity, the passports of my kids and telling them about the AIT’s Notarization service. Hopefully I could get somewhere.
If not… how long is the grace period for an expired license to be renewed with out sitting for the test.

Try this link: state.nj.us/mvc/Licenses/HowToRenew.htm

It looks like you can still do it by mail, but if not, it looks like you may have a three-year grace period.

You’re a real Whiz Scoargo, thanks.

Damn! I was hoping to have my application in the mail today but… The one form I seem to need is not on line. Or more likely it’s hiding from me.

2. A completed driver license application (BA-208).

I could not find it on the DMV website. And I’ve found a private “form providing” company that seems to provide every form but that one.

formsworkflow.com/

If anyone can produce this form by noon today, the first person will get a six pack standard size cans of Heineken, payable by Paypal.

HEADS UP! I called the DMV and asked for clarification on what type of documents were necessary for proof of ID
4. Six points of Identification (certified or photo copies preferred). Please do not send originals. Refer to enclosed brochure or visit our website at njmvc.gov.
Doesn’t make sense, does it?
They said that normal copies are fine. They also said that a postage paid self address envelope is not necessary. That’s good being that our Post Office doesn’t participate in the reciprocal International Reply Coupon (IRC) program.

But about the basic fact that the application is not on-line? I assumed it would be but, apparently NJ has a “Don’t ASK, Don’t Tell Policy”

of course your documents need to be certified copies, I am sure the American Institute in Taipei can help you with that

No you don’t. That’s what the lady in the special department for Out-of-State Renewals told me. What she did not tell me was that I’ll have trouble finding one form. I’ll have to call her back after the Holidays.

As for certifications… Don’t need to go to Taipei. There is Kaohsiung too. As my opening post stated. I created and certified four new American Citizens, but I could not save my driver’s license.

I had just about given up hope until scomargo gave me the news that the state finally allowed mail in renewal. Just under the wire too… Only a few months left.
