No more KLM from TPE to Bangkok

KLM are discontinuing the TPE-BKK sector after 25 March - as they will be flying DIRECT from TPE to AMS and vv from 26 March. Thats one less source of cheap flights to BKK. Aircraft changes to a 772ER as well, and they say 3.5 hours less, which makes me wonder whether they will overfly China.

Excellent!

No more flights with obnoxious pissed-up British sex tourists. And I save 3.5 hours! My trip home in May is going to be so much better. Someone at KLM deserves a medal for this. :notworthy:

Cathay Pacific via HK…8000 always seats available, book via their website.

Not altogether excellent. There goes the cheapest flight to BKK.
Our TPE-BKK KLM flight got cancelled in Feb and they switched us to Thai Airways flight. It was like stepping back 10 years. Old plane.

Good news though for TPE-AMS’ers, although I haven’t done that in a while as Emirates from HKG-UK has been so much cheaper in recent years.

@thebear, Cathay only go to LHR. The big plus of KLM and Emirates is you can hub from AMS or Dubai to other Uk airports.

Aww crap - I love KLM and use them once a month or so to go back and forth between here and Bangkok :frowning:

Their business class section is great!

Does anyone else fly direct?

Ah wait - just checked their website - seems the OP is slightly wrong

They are just opening up a new route TPE>BKK

KLM is the carrier I generally use so this is a bit of really good news for me. TPE-AMS-EDN. Lovely jubblies!

I stopped flying KLM when a China Airlines bag of nails turned up at the gate. Code sharing with CI and looking death in the face? No thanks. I pay for KLM, so I want KLM aircraft with a KLM paint scheme and pilots with funny surnames and an appreciation of windmills.

I have an aversion to CI too, but if they have to switch planes at the last minute, then what can you do?

When they cancelled the KLM flight last month, all those bound for BKK were transferred to Thai Airways.
But those going all the way to AMS were switched to TPE-AMS with CI - arggghhhh.
Not too sure what happens if you refuse the alternative, in those circumstances. Would you lose the ticket?

This route is to become the AMS-TP-MANILA route. AMS-MANILA to be cancelled. Also because of some agreement, you cannot take the TP-MANILA or MANILA-TP leg of the trip. So it seems there still will be drunken piss heads on the way or returning from MANILA

KLM are generally good except for the food and the entertainment system on the old 747s (has been upgraded since). Also the journey with them feels shorter, maybe cause they tend to swoop down into Amsterdam at the last moment and come straight into land; in comparison to coming into LHR where you are doing circles around the city for 20 mins or so

Schipol beats any airport (it never that far to get to a gate and you have free wifi), plus connections and timing of connections is pretty good for me.
Flight attendants are a little bigger, older and supposedly a little crankier, but they are usually good when flying with kids

EVA is 13.5 hours to Paris and according to KLM, it’s 13 hours to Amsterdam so I’d assume it’s the same thing…. take a hard left after North Korea

Going through the KLM website it looks like the same ticket price direct or via BKK

Just hope though that it will not be a lottery for the TP-AMS-TP leg where they interchange between CI and KLM planes

This is great news. While KLMs planes can be old and crappy a faster REAL direct flight to Europe with transfer to regional cities is going to suit me down to the ground.

Regarding Codeshares, you have to be careful these days.

Back in August, my partner and I flew to Prague on KLM. As it turned out, the AMS-PRG sector was actually a Codeshare on Czech Airlines. Both are members of Skyteam, as is CI and DL and others.

Always be careful of transit times too - the 75 minutes that KLM had booked us between flights in AMS was quickly eroded by spending 45 mins in the Immigration queue, and by the time we got to the gate (about the furtherest one away!!!), it had been closed, so we were left waiting for 2 hours for the next flight - which itself was 2 hours late as well. Not a happy experience when you are already feeling wrecked after the flight to AMS.

CI have recently discontinued flying to London - instead they use a Codeshare on KLM from AMS.

Always read the fine print when booking as they are required to disclose who actually operates the flight.

Went on this flight

You fly through HK airspace, over Shenzhen and follow the same flight path/route as HK to AMS

Airplane was full (it was a Wednesday night)
Flight time was 12 hours 50 mins. If like me you cannot sleep sitting up, then it felt like a long flight.
Plane was a 777-200 KLM. From talking with the flight attendants, as far I work out, they do not switch KLM planes with other airlines
We paid extra for economy comfort ~ NTD3.5K. It was a good idea given the plane was packed and judging by the faces - both European and Filipino, the plane was pretty much full from Manila
Flight attendants were helpful. Food was as good as I expect from KLM. Inflight entertainment system had a good selection

Don’t like that they charge extra now for seats within economy.
Was it individual inflight entertainment by seat? Or still the 4 monitors in each aisle (surely not).

I hate that – I had my last trip planned out so that I was flying EVA and a Japanese airlines. BUT, I mostly ended up flying on United  The planes were nearly empty, too.

I refuse to fly CI, by the way.

each seat has own inflight system. They always fly 777’s on this route and would assume all the 777’s have the personal inflight system
