Bush has caused a lot of polarization in America. If he gets reelected and continues his Cowboy policies, what is the possibility of a permanent rift being formed between liberals and conservatives?

Several types have been proposed or advocated:

1. A split along the political spectrum, between pot-smoking Ecotopia and conservative, religious Republic of Gilead.

2. A racial split. For example Thomas Chittum’s book “Civil War Two” predicts the U.S. will split into a white rump state in the North; “Aztlan” in the Southwest; and a black South. Problems include the desire of most Mexicans to get into the U.S. rather than secede from it; and the fantastic notion of black street gangs coalescing into a disciplined army.

3. An economic split, a “revolt of the elites.” If the nation-state is in decline, what will replace it, especially since the wealthy can “shop around” for a relatively cheap government? William Gibson’s “Virtual Light” and Octavia Butler’s “Parable of the Sower” both posit a future America where the wealthy have seceded from the poor; and where you need money to get any government services.
