Not about Bush's response to Katrina

Rascal,

Are you being purposely obtuse?

Yes, in some cases synonyms can be referred to when trying to understand the meaning of a word.

However, I have explained to you that the current issue is a legal issue and that the terms used are exact and precise, and synonyms are thus not interchangable with the accepted term, “imminent”.

Couple that with Bush’s statement repeated several times that he did not want to wait until the threat became “imminent” and even you should begin to understand the issue. :unamused:

Iraq is a threat was true. Iraq has wmds was not, but then did the speaker in question KNOW that this was not true but said it anyone or did he believe that his statement was true. I think that it was the latter.

Anyway, regardless of what you think, the only imminent thing that seems to be happening in Germany is that Schroeder and Fischer will be voted out of office and Germany will consider torture if lives are Imminently in Danger. Nice to know that you will be joining us on something imminently even though in your case it is the use of torture. Try to learn from our example and do things in a more civilized fashion.

It’s still chicken little. If you want to adopt a preemptive doctrine you implicity acknowledge that you are at war. You are going beyond the constraints of an imminent threat because of an asymetry in knowledge. Bush paniced. 9/11 was his acorn and he stirred up so much panic in the community by caracterizing the threat as being immediate, grave, and costly (through his propaganda) that the imminence of the threat was simply irrelevant. We must strike now.

Of course that was all complete crap and this doctrine of a preemptive strike suffered greatly by the revelations that the threat was neither grave, nor immediate. Just a paranoid fantasy that like chicken little has completly undermined his integrity and that of the institutions he governs.

However, my personal belief is that Bush has always gotten exactly what he and his big oil buddies have always wanted. I think he is one of the smartest, most uncaring presidents we have ever known. I don’t buy for a minute he is a bungling fool. He is the greatest exponent of the trickle down, cyphon up theory I’ve ever seen.

Then why did President Bush attack Iraq in March rather than April?

Until you can explain this, I think Americans everywhere are perfectly justified in concluding that the president concluded an attack was imminent.

If you’re going to argue that pre-emptive war was justified due to the nature of WMD, then you must account for the fact that the US attacked in March. After all, as you note, war is a serious business. A responsible country doesn’t attack another sovereign nation as inoculation against some Army specialist shooting his foot off.

[quote=“Tigerman”]And the statement below is an example of how the press did misrepresent the quote:

[quote]“This is about imminent threat.”

Hey, I never said there was a pig in the bag. I said they’re might be a pig in the bag.

I can’t help it if you’re not listening.

I can make it up to you though even though it’s all your fault with a sweet deal I’ve got on a bridge.

(Hey, I didn’t say I owned the bridge. You’re not listening again.)

I find the word games of this administration and its apologists absolutely dishonest and disgusting. Clearly, we were led to believe that there was a threat which did not materialize, and this was used as justification for a war which has alienated much of the world, squandered the goodwill directed at the US after 911, and developed into quite a quagmire. I really can’t imagine a worse administration, and am flabbergasted that anyone would have even the most remote desire to step up and defend it.

(Just trying to push TM over the edge, he heh  – 9997 and counting! :rainbow: )

TM’s gone so far down the rabbit hole, he’s mistaken the glow of the molten center for daylight.

I think there might be something in that imminence argument all the same. That’s the problem with arguing with him. You can’t beat him with a stick.

Of course there is something in that “imminence” argument. Why else do you think all those lawyers and theologians and the President and Congress and the UN and foreign governments and the press and bloggers were talking so much about it? Because it was irrelevant to the issue?

It’s an honor TM to have had your 9999th post. Flip over to your tribute thread in the Feedback forum for the big one.
