Not drowning but waving that will probably reverse by about 2 pm.
I’m flying the coop as earlier reported and I’d love for my friends to come along to HuaShan Alleycats on Sat. Sept. 3 at around 7:30 'til as late as humanly possible.
Mark will put a little food on the bar and I might put some loose change on there too. Don’t be afraid to come along. All are welcome. It’ll be 7 hrs of non-stop poetry reading where I’ll stand on the top balcony bleeding all over you and Mark will sponsor the tomatoes and eggs.

I will definitely be there by 10:00 at the latest. Man, I can’t believe you’re really leaving!
Who is bringing little ones and wives? I might be able to get my sexy little home slice out if there are kids and wives there to speak to. Otherwise, I won’t be able to go .
If I go, Jojo will be, too. And I plan to go. Maybe the kid, too, although there’s talk of him staying with the nanny this weekend so we can get tidied up and start packing for our trip.
EDIT: Me will definitely be there, brat in tow. Probably Jojo too, if she can get through the work she needs to finish before we do the Broken Britain trip.
Name of an Australian band - Not drowning, waving. A play on the idea that you’re supposed to stick your hand up and wave if you’re in trouble in the surf, so the life savers will see you.
All the best, Fox. Another I most certainly can’t make it to, alas.
Stevie Smith – Not Waving but Drowning
Nobody heard him, the dead man,
But still he lay moaning:
I was much further out than you thought
And not waving but drowning.
Poor chap, he always loved larking
And now he’s dead
It must have been too cold for him his heart gave way,
They said.
Oh, no no no, it was too cold always
(Still the dead one lay moaning)
I was much too far out all my life
And not waving but drowning.

I only recognized the line from a Ric Masten reading I went to long time ago.
I ain’t waving babe, I’m drowning
Going down in a cold lonely sea
I ain’t waving babe, I’m drowning
So babe quit waving at me
I ain’t waving babe, I’m crying
I’m crying, oh why can’t you see?
I ain’t fooling babe, I ain’t fooling
So babe quit fooling with me
This ain’t singing babe, it’s screaming
I’m screaming that I’m going down
And you’re smiling babe, and you’re waving
Just like you don’t hear a sound
I ain’t waving babe, I’m drowning
Going down right here in front of you
And you’re waving babe, you keep waving
Hey babe, are you drowning too?
Bittersweet. Glad I had the kid to take care of or I’d have been weeping. Godspeed, Dan my friend.
Remember when we sang that second one for you at your wedding? Was it yours or Andy’s? I forgot. So many years ago, but they passed in the blink of an eye. The blink of an eye.
To those of you who came thanks for making it out. I woke up about 2 in the afternoon with my wife worried sick. Thankfully I was in safe hands at Joe’s.
For those who didn’t make it thanks for the well wishes, otherwise. And thanks to Mark and his staff at Alleycat’s; they were great as always.
