I’m very impressed with what’s out there and am constantly fighting the battle of the bulge. The days of lining up for an hour outside G’Day Café or the first The Diner or Grandma Nitties to get your Western fix are long gone. Pizzas, burgers, ribs, pastas, etc so much out there now. Same for beers and ciders and other quality alcohol, it’s everywhere now. Also, all the supermarkets now have everything you could ever need to cook great Western dishes. I found whole jalapenos in a can, cream cheese, bread crumbs, good bacon at Jason’s the other day and have made several batches of jalapeno poppers already. That would have been impossible ten years ago.
And that’s just Western food. Nevermind the amazing bbq, kuai chao (beer house), Hakka food out there.
I’ve been making dinner at home most nights this last year due to health push and trying to slim down. Very nice salads and steaks from ingredients mostly bought from Carrefour, Costco, Jason’s etc. You have to shop wisely, of course, and realize that certain Western items are relatively expensive, but there are creative ways around this - smaller quantities, looking for specials, buying standard items at less expensive places, etc.
