Hi everyone,

I’m an international student from Bulgaria, considering applying to National Tsing Hua University’s IBP in EECS for Fall 2027.

I’ve been researching the program extensively, and I’ve already contacted the university directly. The IBP office confirmed that the required courses, electives, and general education courses are available in English, allowing students to complete their graduation requirements in English.

However, I’ve come across some conflicting information online, particularly about lab courses and group projects being conducted primarily in Mandarin.

I have a few questions:

1. Are lectures, laboratory sessions, assignments, and examinations genuinely accessible in English, particularly during years 2-4 in EECS-GS?
2. Are courses such as Embedded Systems and Lab (EE2405) manageable without strong Mandarin proficiency? Do professors and teaching assistants generally accommodate English-speaking students?
3. Is it realistically possible to follow an English-taught pathway without significantly restricting my elective choices or delaying graduation?
4. How much Mandarin is it recommended to learn before studying? I intend to learn Mandarin throughout my studies, but I would initially have very limited proficiency..
5. How easy is it for international students to participate in group projects and work with local classmates when they don’t speak much Mandarin?

For context, I’m primarily interested in embedded software, computer architecture, operating systems, and low-level development. I’ve already been working on several systems programming projects, so the EECS curriculum is particularly appealing to me.

I also have a bit of family living in Taiwan and intend to learn Mandarin seriously, so I’m not expecting everyone around me to communicate in just English indefinitely. I’m mainly concerned about whether the language barrier could negatively affect my academic performance during the first few years.

I’d appreciate recent firsthand experiences, rather than general impressions of English-taught programs.

Sorry for the long post, and thanks in advance.
