I’ll just say that I have lived in Taiwan for decades and rarely visit the old country. For one thing, I simply can’t afford it on my pitiful Taiwanese wages. But I love this America that lingers in my soul…

it sounds so much like the old excuses
. . . while also throwing smoke around while wealth inequality increases and the neoliberal takeover of institutions (including NTU, the topic of this thread) continues apace.
I’ve discussed this with some forumosans before. They think they are right, I think I am right, so I suspect we won’t arrive at some grand dialectical synthesis of ideas here.
Guy
Very unlikely. But I am learning what people think the problem is with DEI from this discussion. It’s been quite informative. The whole DEI/woke thing seemed so silly that I just ignored it before.
But I’m sure as hell paying attention now that the billionaire class has managed leverage resentment about DEI and wokeness into pretty much absolute power in the US and in turn the whole world order is changing.
Education is always better late than never…I guess.

I did my doctorate in education at a North American university in the last decade, the CRT/DEI thread has lots of information…
Interesting that this is happening now; one thing that Trump may have succeeded at long term with his executive order is simply getting this issue into the national conversation. [There's a bill in New Hampshire to ban Critical Race Theory. Here's my testimony supporting it.] Preach it! https://www.dailywire.com/news/new-hampshire-rep-targets-critical-race-theory-proposes-divisive-trainings-ban
Hmmm…one of the whitest states in the country…

I think, technically, what you have put forward is a racist argument.
Here in Canada and the U.S., online learning platforms like Coursera are quite popular among full-time working professionals like myself. They’re very affordable—often costing about the same as a Netflix subscription—making them accessible for continued education.
I haven’t been to Taiwan yet, but I’m in the final stage of getting my Gold Card approved. As part of my preparation, I took this
Taiwan Law in Focus: Economy, Society and Democracy
from NTU (National Taiwan University) through an online platform to better understand Taiwan. I was really impressed by the NTU professors; they demonstrated a clear understanding of the common law system and had deep knowledge of the U.S. Constitution.
I also used Coursera to prepare for my AWS Cloud Certification—I studied online and then traveled to Seattle to take the exam.
I’m curious—how popular is Coursera among people in Taiwan? What do they think of it?
My impression is it and similar sites are known and used by people who have an interest in strengthening their skills in specific areas.
I noted in my OP in the thread @TT linked that I hoped Trump (in 2020) had been “getting this issue into the national conversation.” Leftists for too long swept conversation about this under the rug, relying on exuberant homerism and haw-hawing. The field was left open for the right to respond with their own jingoism, which has had considerable success, not least for the reason that there are many things about CRT/DEI that Americans will tend not to like when it’s put under a microscope. Unfortunately I guess it’s yet another thing this country is content to kick around like a deflated football rather than try to reach some kind of mutual understanding much less consensus.
You think that course looks like a joke?
What about this?
Campus Reform | Chapman University offers course on ‘Porn Studies’ with ‘sexually explicit material’
The course, titled “Porn Studies,” explores “pornography and the porn industry” as “historical, social, cultural, political, and economic phenomena,” and will consider research by “feminist and queer porn theorists” as well as “the intersections of critical race studies and porn studies, and trans studies and porn studies.”
I wonder if there will be a “Dirty Sanchez” element? ![]()
Think I will pass though. If it were a Yale course, maybe.

I suspect both will be equally useful for the average punter.
Came up as a Facebook ad
The topics are ridiculous, none of the 5 professors for the one course look qualified to teach any of it, zero to do with lesdership.and management, 40% of the grade is attendance and participation
Way ahead of the curve with DEI though
What a joke
They are being honest (probably without knowing just how on point they are being). Advertising a pre masters…a pawn ahead of other pawns. And, a red pawn at that. Pretty much on point for current university reality, no?
Reminds me of a state college near my hometown. Their slogan for their business program was “Be a leader, follow one!” ![]()
