That’s pretty good to be fair.
Wow! Your process sounds much better. I had to go NIA and MOI to apply and get the TARC and passport myself. My HHRO only gave the naturalization certificate.
In your case, was renunciation the main issue as opposed to the wait period?
Main issue was the wait period because I had to travel a lot. Ironically wouldn’t have been such a problem last two years.
I get my booster shot on Monday and after that I will schedule my health check appointment to have that ready for next month.
I also have to shave and take the picture to update all my documents when I get my ID. I’ll go to the one where they take all the wrinkles and imperfections off lol.
I need to get my affairs in order real quick since I have to travel in the first week on June.
This was definitely not my experience with the Taipei HRO, Zhongshan.
This was under ‘testing’ in August 2020 when I went through. Everyone was a bit unsure, so still recommended a visit to BOCA to make sure the English name alias thing was entered correctly.
I have the NWOHR passport so they can use that for reference.
I did it in the Xinyi branch.
Currently living in Australia on a NWOHR passport as a non-citizen (on an ex-citizen visa).
Tourists with a NWOHR can enter as well provided they apply for a visa (just not an ETA).
I’m planning on going to Malaysia in a few months as well as some island nations in the South Pacific. From my (admittedly small amount) of research NWOHR passport holders can enter most of the South Pacific and Malaysia visa free. I will update post travels ![]()
I plan on being a NWOHR for quite some time and I work in the travel industry so hopefully there will be many opportunities for me to test out a NWOHR passport over the next few years ~ decade’s depending on what life throws at me
Entered Malaysia with NWOHR passport. Easy, same as any other passport.
The immigration officer just said “Oh, do you live in Taiwan?” Out of curiosity.
Note that this is for Taiwanese with a TARC (Taiwan Area Residency Card)
It is also for reference purposes only. Make sure to confirm with the individual country before booking and post your success below.
CONFIRMED COUNTRIES: (This list will be updated as people update their successes or confirm through authorities.)
Brunei
Ireland
Malaysia
Philippines
Singapore
South Korea
Vietnam
Indonesia
Kazakhstan - letter of invitation needed
I want to create a thorough list of countries you can travel visa free on the NWOHR passport and countries that allow you easy visa. I have so far done the following research.
It seems that countries like the Philippines that require Taiwanese passport holders an ETA allow you one as long as you have a valid TARC. - https://onlinetravel.meco.org.tw/
Vietnam allows NWHOR to travel there too. (Just ask me… I used my NWOHR Taiwan passport to go there!
Ireland does as well and you don’t need to apply for a waiver. You can just fly there with your NHWOR passport and get a visa free access on arrival!
The US requires a visa but grants it easily to those with a TARC.
The Schengen visa is granted easily to those with a TARC and it seems that they will allow you to input your TARC on the application for the ETA which is soon to be implemented.
New Zealand also accepts TARC as your ID number for ETA.
Indonesia - e-VOA (they call it e-visa on arrival but it is just an e-visa) no mention of HHR. If you do the e-VOA you can also use e-gate to enter Indonesia and you will be emailed a confirmation of your entry.
The e-customs form however does not have Taiwan on the list of nationalities, you can just select other and type Taiwan.
Overall it seems that if you hold a TARC the Taiwan passport is very similar with the exception of the US and some countries that don’t yet have ETA’s/evisas implemented. However, as long as you have a TARC… you won’t get denied for a VISA. I contacted US immigration and they stated that if you are a naturalised NWOHR with a TARC they won’t deny a tourist visa and it would likely be automatically approved. (Because your TARC gives you right of abode to Taiwan which to them is a ‘low risk’ country.)
this looks like an extremely useful thread, thanks @comfy123 !
Do the majority of places ask to see a TARC? Definitely love to see what you find out
As part of any visa application it would be advisable to provide it as it shows right of abode
I travelled on my first issued passport with no Taiwan ID number in it after I got HHR and ID. Was never asked to see my ID on arrival in other countries. I travelled to Singapore Malaysia UK and they were like dang, this is a new one, a white dude with a Taiwan passport lol.
In Germany it was they see my German surname and speak to me in German and ask where is my visa. I had to tell them I’m not from PRC China lol
common story with my wife, many times in Europe she gets asked for a visa.
I can confirm you can travel to Singapore on a NWOHR passport as long as you have a valid Taiwan entry permit. Went there last year without any issue.
I’m wondering if any other NWOHR passport holders here have traveled to Japan. I’m planning a trip there and hoping they will also accept an entry permit.
I am curious what Airports (or ports) was this, travelled with Taiwanese co workers entered with me in FCO and MXP both nothing said (e gate + stamp), TLL(Estonia)/VNO ( Lithuania)/Helsinki almost no questions, Swiss (ZRH) talk a but but most it was where to eat in Zurich. As a Japanese most questions are going into Japan (customs mostly ha, immigration is now gates)
A few times in Paris, tbh it only happened in Paris. Baguette cunts😂
