Objectivity and bias in media

And media, well, I think we all know if it bleeds, it leads. The more they can get you to stay inside and watch their panic porn the higher the ratings. Researchers at Dartmouth built a database recently monitoring the COVID coverage of the major news outlets across the world and found that while other countries mix the good news in with the bad, the U.S. national media reported almost 90% bad news. Even as things were getting better, the reporting remained negative.

In a recent Gallup survey, Democrats did much worse than Republicans in getting the right answer to the fundamental question: what are the chances that someone who gets COVID will need to be hospitalized? The answer is between one and 5%. 41% of Democrats thought it was over 50%, another 28% put the chances at 20 to 49.

So almost 70% of Democrats are wildly off on this key question and also have a greatly exaggerated view of the danger of COVID too and the mortality rate among children. All of which explains why today, the states with the highest share of schools that are still closed are all blue states. So if the right-wing media bubble has to own things like climate change denial, shouldn’t liberal media have to answer for how did your audience wind up believing such a bunch of crap about COVID.

It was VERY hard to believe when it came out and seemed like a bunch of nonsensery Trumphate.

As Phil Rizzuto would say,

See, some may get frustrated with the speed others come around at, I’m of the opinion and faith that eventually people do come around though:

Employees of the cable network One America News do not believe all of the claims that are aired on it, according to a report by The New York Times.

According to the Sunday report, about a dozen staffers have left the network in recent months following the January 6 riot at the US Capitol that left five people dead. The network for months aired, repeated, and speculated on the former president’s false claims about voter fraud in the 2020 election.

There is no evidence to suggest any substantial fraud influenced the election. President Joe Biden won the election by beating Trump in key battleground states.

“Many people have raised concerns,” Allysia Britton, a news producer who recently left the network told The New York Times. “And the thing is, when people speak up about anything, you will get in trouble.”

Charles Herring, the president of OAN, confirmed to The Times that about 12 staffers had recently departed the network, but said they were “low-level” staffers.

I love the coffee boy/girl stuff. :joy:

I’m sure the usual suspects will rush in to explain how everybody is just jealous of Pooty-poot and making stuff up coz he’s so dreamy.

not surprisingly

I’m not even from the US and only started following US political news because Trump was elected (still couldn’t watch it). From the escalator, the inviting in the Russians around day 1, to telling off major US allies. That circus was non-stop entertainment until January 6th. That’s when I got on the political threads here to get my news entertainment

Ah, those details… they’re like a line of ghosts waiting for the sun to go down

So crucial was this fairy tale about Sicknick that it made its way into the official record of President Trump’s impeachment trial in the Senate , and they had Joe Biden himself recite from the script, even as clear facts mounted proving it was untrue.

Tucker adds some anti-gay flavor to his pro-white supremacy resume, this guy is on a roll!

Also the Jesse Helms Foundation. That combination, might actually be enough to see him get cancelled.

At least if it was only that stuff from a long time ago, he could at least pretend to have changed.

The Replacement Theory WS stuff he was promoting on his show a week or 2 ago though, kind of makes that part tough.

I think he wants to run for president.

That’s the problem, Tucker focused a lot on immigration, which is something a racist would do, but talking about immigration issues doesn’t define someone as a racist, it’s a perfectly acceptable topic to cover. He was called a racist by many on the left for this, for myself I don’t like to unfairly judge and gave him the benefit of the doubt. Looks like I was wrong.

Jesse Helms seems to be a famously racist politician, no one would want their name associated with someone who is a notable racist and even worse someone else whose claim to fame is killing of a gay mayor.

Yeah, I don’t think that’s ever going to be on the table for Tucker. I don’t think he will survive this and stay on Fox.

The Replacement Theory WS stuff he was promoting on his show a week or 2 ago though, kind of makes that part tough.

This is where I disagree with some on the left, they are talking about this topic as if it is a given it is racist to do so. Take away the US context and apply the same logic to Taiwan and discussing the implications of a lot of Chinese becoming Taiwan citizens, you have a perfectly valid topic to discuss and with potentially real consequences.

Someone who objected to the “hands up don’t shoot” pushed by the media had good reason to suspect at the time that didn’t happen, yet when they questioned if that was really what happened, they got called racists, despite the fact that was proven factually true, that it did indeed not happen.

This is bias I guess, if writing for extrapolative paranoids read your shit.

Thank goonness, it’s like not even at the freak out point yet.

The programs immediately targeted by Biden’s new priority criteria for grants are small. Once in place, however, those criteria will undoubtedly influence the much larger and vastly more dangerous “Civics Secures Democracy Act.” That bill would appropriate $1 billion a year, for six years, for history and civic education.

I think that’s a great idea. Maybe throw some mandated finance and philosophy credits at them too.

I hate most all Yahoo News stories because they aren’t, but this one…yoinks…that’s a high level of bias.
