Just a link to an article about “Chinese Cooking”…not for the squeamish.
A couple of days ago, a Costa Rican newspaper published a horrible, disgusting story about a man that enjoys eating live animals: kittens, puppies, chickens. Their cover picture was the man biting into a kitten, blood flowing down his chin while the kitten screamed in pain.
In some blogs, they justified the guy’s actions saying “but they do the same in Asia!”
I thought that was a well balanced article.
Some old folks told me that thirty years years ago the Taiwnese cooked pigs like that. They would lower the whole pig (alive) into a large vat of boiling water.
And of course they still kill snakes alive and slowly down snake alley. But of course killing snakes isn’t as news worthy as killing cats.
Interesting issue.
I am amazed at how popular snake alley still is, in 2007. Visiting work colleagues put it at the top of their list to do in Taipei ![]()
I’m ashamed of the place.
Great thread title, TC.
& an absorbing article.
A complete lack of empathy. Is it a cultural trait, or ingrained behaviour caused by extreme circumstances over millennia? A bit of both, perhaps.
Whatever it’s source, it 's a foul & pernicious abomination.
