Online TEFL?

so i have heard from a few people on here, and youtube that i should at least get a crappy online TEFL certificate before i come. but now i have come across a bunch of people on here saying not to bother even wasting 50 quid on one and it is worthless…

well if its worthless thats fine, i dont really fancy spending much time and money on something when the reality is that im going to be used as an entertaining white monkey anyway. but do i need it to get jobs or not? will it make any difference?

i think i have the other basic level requirements covered. have BA, from UK, look white , presentable/normal… sort of

btw i am going there to stay with my gf(and because it looks like an awesome place) i have my own freelance work so i do NOT want to be making a career out of english teaching. i basicly just need to do the minimum to get the ARC and hopefully cover rent.

It’s only really worth it if you want the training of how to teach ESL. If you feel fine just going in a classroom never having taught before, then go ahead and do it that way. They can be worth your while if you want some concept of how to teach ESL, but in terms of being able to get you a job, it’s extremely marginal for the vast majority of employers.

thanks a lot gav. i wont wait until i have that before i go to taiwan then, thats helpful.

is there any worthy experienced to be gained from it? i mean, there is not going to be any classroom experience from an online thing…

If you already have a BA/BS degree, I’d avoid the TEFL. It really won’t help you with most teaching jobs in Taiwan, since they’re not REALLY teaching jobs.
