My wife and I accidentally discovered/invented this sandwich with a delicious and spicy Indian twist, and I just had to share. If we had to name it, it would probably be something like “the Ham Sahni.” The ingredients, in order from bottom to top:
1 slice of sourdough bread
A layer of cream cheese
Julie Sahni’s tomato chutney, warm or cold
A slice or two of thinly-sliced ham
My taste buds and stomach are still raving an hour after having finished this. Thing is, you have to make the tomato chutney. Here’s the basic recipe I found on the web:
I think it might be a tiny bit ethically questionable to have put Sahni’s recipe up on the internets, so here’s a link to her cookbook with a hearty endorsement of its purchase-worthiness:
Sounds good. Being an American, chutney’s never been a big part of my diet, but whenever I hear the word I’m reminded of the fantastic pepper steaks my chef-brother once cooked for us with Major Grey’s mango chutney.
Pssst! A certain Sri Lankan roti vendor just got given a jar of spicy mango chutney by one of his Indian friends. All the way from Bombay or whatever. The real, everyday stuff, like you’d buy in an Indian supermarket. Boy, is it ever GOOOD. Spicy and sour with very little sweetness at all.
